Obese children: the product of neglect?
Like my sister said, if some parent really is contributing to their child's obesity so much as to constitute neglect, then they are probably neglectful in other respects.
The idea, though, that a government shrouded in debt and inefficiency could actually care for overweight children better than there own parents BAFFLES me.
My biggest concern with this whole theory is that it's based on the assumption that weight is a 1:1 correlation with what we eat/exercise. I believe that to be WHOLLY untrue. You could have the best parent in the world with a heavy child. I'd be much more concerned about the manipulative mind-control tactics of parents who put too much pressure into their childrens' weights.

I was obese as a child (we're talking about 7 years old into adulthood) DESPITE my parents' best efforts. Was I 300 pounds in 2nd grade? NO! That's a very rare case and almost senseless to discuss.
Any sport I wanted to do my parents signed me up for. Dance, gymnastics, soccer, basketball, volleyball, softball..you name it. I went to Weigh****chers and two different diet doctors.
My parents were thin (they've gained quite a bit of weight since I've had surgery, ironically enough) but my dad grew up heavy himself as an asthmatic. My mom grew up a tiny, competition ice-skater (in great shape all through her 20s even). My dad was actually very skinny when my sister and I were younger. They are both now moderaltey overweight (mom is a sz 14) but not obese.
I find it hilarious that people think they can control their kids' lives to that extent, even at a young age. Some kids can eat pizza, coke, and reeses each day at lunch and be rail-thin. Some can bring their packed lunch each day with diet coke, veggies, and wheat bread and be obese. Life ain't fair.....
