Opinions on Probiotics

Thought I would open the discussion up on probiotics if you use them, why you use them, what you've heard about using them.

Here's my story.  Back 4 years ago while researching WLS and supplements/vitamins I was in the Vitamin Shoppe and talked in length and detail of WHY I was there.  It was suggested to me that I really look into probiotics because of my future protein diet and just overal heath of my colon.  As they are in the business to sell I took the information read it, checked out the 411 on Activia (as it contains probiotics) yada yada.  In my opinion it is because I am taking a probiotic supplement daily that I have never had to battle constipation since my VSG.  I do also make sure to drink 10 cups of water daily.  I worried the last 2 weeks since being back on track and mainly eating protein again and hardly any vegetables that I might have a problem.  Nope not a one had a small movement this morning before leaving for work and just had another (I know TMI) but hey if I can't tell you guys who can I tell?

So who takes them and why?

I take them...

I started on them about 6 months before my VSG and they've helped tremendously with my "regularity". The first ones I took were the Phillip's Colon Health and now I take Renew Life Ultimate Flora from the Vitamin Shoppe. My reason for switching was to find a dairy & gluten free product. In any case the probiotics do make my gut very happy!

Have a good day Ms Shell and stay cool, it's a hot one out there :)

A 2008 study out of Stanford found that bypass patients taking probiotics lost more weight that patients who didn't. It was a really small study, but it seems like such a small extra step to take, and of course it has so many other benefits.

I take them....I started them on the suggestion of a gastroenterologist due to IBS symptoms Pre-OP...I started with Digestive Advantage IBS formula...then switched to Digestive Advantage with Lactase, since I later found out I had a dairy intolerance...I've also tried other brands, but I like the D.A. best...

I still had the brief bout of constipation early post-op, but I think overall it helps with preventing the stomach aches and diarrhea I used to get all my life..and I think it helped prevent me from getting sick on the food while I was recently vacationing in Mexico...my friend wasn't as lucky, she got something that had her vomiting and diarrhea for days.

Since I have started on solid foods I have been having issues with being irregular so I decided last week to start probiotics.  I hate the taste of yogurt, always have.  the only kind I can tolerate are the Whips brand but I tire of them quickly.  I bought a once a day pill from Target that is supposed to have all of the benefits of Activia and so far (day 4) it seems to be working.

There are a lot of reasons to take probiotics.. too long to go into here but I will tell you on the phone some time. One thing I recommend is that folks get enteric coated probiotics.. this helps the probiotics survive the acidic stomach environment so they make it to the intestines where they are needed.

I started taking them, the Align brand, at the suggestion of my PCP, who thought they might help with my acid problems. I don't know whether it's the probiotics or time or whatever, but I now can get by with one prescription PPI daily instead of 2, which is great. So I'll keep taking them!

Probiotics are live microorganisms thought to be beneficial to the host organism. According to the currently adopted definition by FAO/WHO, probiotics are: "Live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host".[1] Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and bifidobacteria are the most common types of microbes used as probiotics; but certain yeasts and bacilli may also be helpful. Probiotics are commonly consumed as part of fermented foods with specially added active live cultures; such as in yogurt, soy yogurt, or as dietary supplements.

I use them for digestive reasons, and to put good bacteria in my body.
