Do you miss food? Do you enjoy food as much as you used to?

Meg I understand what you are saying and yes it was rough in the beginning (first month or so) but I am now learning a whole new way of cooking for me and my family.  They will all benifit from a heathier way of eating.  I am seeking and making some very healthy and tasty sleeve friendly foods.  Hang in there!  It is worth it!

I'm still obsessing a little about food as I'm still relatively newly post-op and I really do believe I'm a food addict, so I do miss the "comfort" that I got from sitting down to a buffet and eating HUGE, or grazing all day long on snack foods and crap...

BUT, I am spending a lot more time nowadays thinking "Hey, I feel so good and it's only just the beginning!" instead of feeling remorse over not being able to stuff myself anymore. It is still a daily struggle for me to remember that we eat to live not live to eat.

Anyhow, I've been eating out with family and friends a bit lately, and I absolutely LOVE it. It's still just as delicious, a lot healthier, and a heck of a lot less expensive!

I don't even regret doing it one tiny little bit. Life is good.

I enjoy food even more now after surgery than before. I know it no longer has control over me. I also enjoy the lowered grocery costs, even tho I'm eating more fresh and exotic foods.

It's also a lot of fun in cooking the smaller portions to plate them up prettily with garnishes. It makes me feel like I'm eating out at a fancy place all the time now. After all, I'm WORTH IT!! LOL

Thanks everyone for your postings!

I was worried earlier then I saw a picture of what I used to look like. It made me think of how great I used to feel when I was thin. I decided that maybe not enjoying food as much as I used to is such a small trade of for better self esteem and more energy.

I was looking at a picture of a time in my life when I was happy, felt great about my body and could do just about anything I wanted to do. I know this surgery will help me find that girl again. I am sure I will miss how foods make me feel but the trade off is so worth it. I am really glad I found that picture, it really made me realize how different my life is now and how much I look forward to getting back to where I used to be.

Thanks so much to everyone on this forum. I would never have even considered VSG (was looking at lapband) and I probably would not have really even done anything if it were not for this forum. I am so grateful for all information and all the encouragement!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I don't really miss food but I also don't enjoy it exactly the same way I used to.

Prior to surgery though, I'm not really sure I was "enjoying" food either though. I felt addicted to sugar and really felt controlled by my cravings. Now I don't experience those cravings any more and recently when I did eat something sugary, it didn't taste the same to me and I was able to just have a coupld of bites and throw the rest out.

One thing that has changed for me, but does not seem to be the common experience, is that when I am under a lot of stress or feeling down about things, instead of coping with food now, I find that I don't want to eat and that it is hard to force mysef to eat anything. That certainly wasn't the case for me pre-op.

But I have never had such great success with dieting or my lap band and I am really getting to an exciting place in my weight loss where I am starting to shop in regular size store (I've been a plus size forever!) and really starting to see the difference. I really love my sleeve and I would do it all again in a heartbeat.

I'm glad you found this site too and saved yourself the risk of the lap band!

Lindsey,

I am so glad to hear about your success! That's so awesome to be out of plus sizes. I vividly remember the first time I had to buy in that department. I was with my husband and was so embarrassed. I have shopped there ever since. I can't wait to be able to shop at the mall. There are so many cute clothes that go up to like a 16.

Thanks for your nice words too!

I don't miss food. I eat great food, just not much of it.  I love to cook fabulous meals.  Now, I just eat a tiny portion.

Last night we ate out.  We had grilled chicken with a feta cheese, artichocke heart, and sun-dried tomato sauce (to die for, btw), cauliflower puree, and grill squash.  What's not to love? We I ate my 2.5oz piece of the chicken, a little puree and a piece of squash.  My husband had the rest.   I don't eat carbs, sugar, or things like that, but I also don't miss them because I eat well otherwise.

You just have to be careful.  Your eyes will literally be bigger than your stomach.  Watch your portions, and you'll be fine.

Lol, I love to cook great food too. I am fine with smaller portions, I just want to be able to enjoy the taste as much as I do now. Some people say they enjoy it more now since they know they are only going to get a little. I guess that makes sense.

Thanks for you posting!
