Mirena (Guys Beware!! It's about periods)

I am having the Mirena IUD put in to try to help control my, out of control, periods.  Since losing weight, my periods have become horrible.  Super heavy bleeding and much longer duration.  Therefore, my GYN suggested Mirena IUD.  I've been researching and from what I gather, they say about 5% of woman experience weight gain.  Lord knows, I have worked too hard to lose all of this weight just to gain it back because of birth control.  From what I'm reading, they say 7-10 pounds.  Has anyone on here had one, either pre-op or post-op, and what has been your experience?  Especially post-op, did you gain? If so, how much?  I'm really worried about gaining.  UGH!!!!  Please share.  Thanks!!

Just another note, I don't need the IUD for protection.  My husband had a vasectomy.  I am strictly doing it because of the bad periods.

I have had my Mirena IUD for 41/2 years.  I do blame some of my weight gain on it BUT it resolved my heavy periods.  I had periods so bad I did not have a life for one week a month.  It was awful I could not go anywhere because I either felt terrible or I had to be close to a bathroom all the time.  Since I had the IUD put in I get my period 1 to 2 days a month.  I am getting this one out in the fall I am going to try to do with out it.  But if I have any problems it is going right back in because I cannot live like that again.

I have gone through two Mirena IUD's(pre-op).  I had a new one inserted after the first expired (5 years).  I am on my second year with this one.  I don't have a period at all!  It was really light and intermittent the first few years, but I dont think Ive had a period in well over a year!  I don't recall any significant weight gain (although I was already overweight).  If your asking for an "opinion", I'd say its totally worth it!

I'm on my second Mirena Iud. I've had the iud for about five years and so far I have not experienced any excess weight gain that I could blame on the iud. But I have been one of the lucky ones who's periods completely stop with the iud in. For the first six months I spotted, then nothing. But just a tip, sex for the man can seem strange in the beginning and dependant on the position. The strings, which are basically like fishing line, can 'poke him' if ya know what I mean.

I'm pre-op and I use the IUD, had one put in after each of my children were born.  I LOVE IT!  I never associate birth control with weight gain -  just a big girl and didn't associate the two.  I rarely bleed if ever, and when I do, its very spotty.  However, I still do experience the emotional side of things, the bloating and the cravings the one week before my period starts... I just don't bleed.  It's a great birth control too.  When I was trying for my second, I had the IUD taken out and got pregnant the very next week.  Must warn that the insertion of the damn thing is not fun.. very painful for a day after.

Good luck!

I take depo-provera shots which completely stopped my periods. I have taken them for several years but don't feel they have affected my weight since surgery.

I use Mirena. Got it about a month before VSG. I didn't have any weight gain at all. I decided on it because of the low side effects. It has helped somewhat with my cycle, but my Gyn says it could take up to 6 months to really regulate my period. Insertion was pretty painful, but then again I've never had kids and they say it is easier if you have.

I'm on my second one and I love it. Easy, almost painless insertion, and no periods anymore. As for weight gain, I actually lost weight after I had mine in. Thumbs way, way up from me.

I have one and I have had it for about 8 months before surgery.  I did not gain weight from it...well I gained weight from my own bad choices.  I like having it..just don't even know it is there and my periods are very light.  I was able to lose my weight having it in..although I am not the fasted loser but I don't think that is because of my IUD.
