Is there a trick when making protein shakes in blender?

Okay so I am on liquids and I keep reading people making protein concoctions in the blender. Well my first attempt sucked!LOL It was super foamy and all the ice seperated at the bottom and the foam stuff on top. I am trying to make it into an "iced mocha"! I used water, ice, and protein powder. Am I doing or using something wrong? Do I need to add a little milk maybe? Day 2 of liquids seems to be going okay! T minus 3 days til surgery!!! Sooooo freaking excited to begin my new life!

it incorporates too much air in a blender; the magic bullet is much better;
try using pulse button; use 1/2 skim  milk  & 1/2 water maybe.
If pulse won't work, try the slowest button.
Hope that helps.
One other thing you can do is find a shaker bottle that you do yourseself.  It helps if there is a blender ball inside that whisks it together as you shake.  No foamies this way.

It works best if you can hand mix the protein powder with just a few ounces of your liquid of choice (milk, water, juice), then add the rest of your ingredients and mix them a bit by hand.  Then use your blender or mixing bottle to get it going.  No matter what I've done, I always end up with foam at the top.  I just let it sit for awhile in the fridge until at least some of the foam goes away.

Thanks guys! Think I may need to breakdown and buy a Magic Bullet! I have a shaker bottle I guess I can try it in that one time first.

Personally, I think the blender is adding too much air.  I just put my protein powder and water into a plastic shaker cup (with whisking ball).  I shake it for a few and drink.  Since I can't gulp it down, it helps that it is still in the shaker cup so that I can shake it a few more times to blend when it begins to separate.

It depends don the type of protein. They whey protein isolate foams up a lot. :-( I prefer a blend. BSN Lean Dessert is my favorite protein powder. Love the chocolate coconut!

I use a blender bottle w/whisk ball inside.  I did not like all the foam either.  $5-$10 on amazon.

I don't like all that foam, either.  First I pulse-blend my water, frozen fruit, ice, whatever I'm adding, and when that's all chopped/mixed, then I add the protein powder and just do a few quick pulses to get that blended in.  Cuts way down on the foam, although there's still a little bit.

I couldn't stomach the foam after surgery.

Every evening, the last thing I do before bed is make a two-serving size (two 30 g scoops of whey protein isolate in 16 oz of milk) in an ordinary water bottle which I shake up manually and leave overnight in the refrigerator. By the morning, it is thoroughly dissolved without any disgusting lumps. A little settles to the bottom, especially the chocolate flavor, but a quick stir with a teaspoon corrects that froth-free and makes it perfect to drink directly or use as an ingredient in any other recipe. I'm thinking of buying an ice cream machine and using this mixture in it.
