What are good crabs
Now this is just my experience, and everyone knows that I advised people to find what works for them, but during my losing stage there is no good vs. bad carb. A carb is a carb. I avoided all of them like the plague. Why is typically the question and my answer remains the same; I didn't have room for anything else other than protein based foods, and I knew my body would run with those "good" carbs and burn those first instead of fat. My main source of carbs was from dairy, and the few green veggies I ate. But, I avoided all fruits because of the high sugar counts, and if a veggie was over 55 on the glycemic index, that food did not cross my lips. I ate no more than 30gr of carbs per day. I also did not use shakes for protein supplement since I was able to eat all of my protein grams via food, I didn't have room for anything other stuff.
In maintenance all that changed, and once I got to goal, I started adding foods and all carbs back into my diet. I am not sensitive to carbs, they don't make me crave more carbs, but some experience this crazy "eat a carb, crave a carb" thing. I just avoided them while losing because I had a lot to lose, and didn't want to worry about good vs bad carbs. A carb was a carb in my book. It worked for me, and I never felt the need to eat carbs through my losing stage. I hope that makes sense, and I want to stress that I am not saying "my way is the only way", but won't deny my results. It also really helped my change my relationship with food. I made different foods (protein based) a priority, and that has remained the same through maintenance.

Thank you, Thank you USAF Wife---you are a wealth of information and I am finding your advice invaluable. And thank you for giving us a quick rundown how you stay in maintenance. The advice from the vets on this board is phenomenal--so much more than one could get from the 5 minutes they get to spend with the doctor or his nurse every 6 months.
I got in 60-70gr of protein via food sources. I never used shakes since they all made me puke thanks to developing whey and lactose intolerance post-op. I was able to hit 60gr of protein once I got to mushy/soft foods by eating 4 meals a day, each meal consisted of at least 15gr of protein. No snacking, that was my surgeon's plan back then, and I stuck to it.

Others have already touched on this, but my understanding is that what makes a carb "good" or "bad" is the affect it has on your sugar levels. Simple carbs like sugar, white bread, white pasta, white rice, all cause your glucose levels to spike and then crash; hence, BAD carbs! Good carbs (also called "complex" carbs) take much longer to process, and so don't cause the spike/crash syndrome.
I remember my mom telling me YEARS ago that "sugar craves sugar" -- she was SOOOO right!
Hope this helps.
