Want to know my secret...
I started by walking around the neighborhood while I was on leave from work. Took a month off as I had the time and had a really understanding boss that encouraged me to stay out.
When I returned to work I started walking a portion of the Trip. Instead of taking the subway I walked. That added up to 1.4 miles each way. Almost 3 miles a day of walking.
Then I started to go to the gym. Started with mostly cardio. Bikes, Treadmill, Elliptical. Once I had the endurance I started taking Spin Classes (it's included in my gym membership). I was able to justify the gym membership by not taking the subway on a daily basis.
I've also started taking strength (weights) training classes at the gym (again included in the membership). Trying to build core strength as well as help with some of my loose skin. I would like to use a personal trainer but it's very expensive. I found that I don't need the personal training...the group setting is good as I'm not that advance where I could benefit from a 1:1.
Spin classes are awesome. You can go at your own pace...and it's fun. Spin classes are about an hour and I do them 1 or 2 times a week.

Thanks Mike for detailing about your exercises. I will ensure all the facilities mentioned by you in the post are available in the gym i would select.
This raises a question in my mind, when i used to gym earlier the instructors would often recommend workout for abs on a daily basis, so post-op will it be safer for me to do abs workouts too, or just stick to upper and lower body only.
What would you recommend?

You should check with your doctor in regards when you are cleared for exercise. Mine didn't allow me to do any exercise besides walking until after 4 weeks and then it was for cardio only.
There's a fitness forum on OH that could provide much more information on the subject.
