But how many of us gain weight eating yogurt, beans, milk, and fruit, which are all carbs? How many gain weight from brown rice and all bran cereal? I'm willing to bet that it's very few.

Obviously we can't go back to eating like before and maintain or lose weight with the sleeve. But not all carbs are created equal. I get really frustrated on this board because it seems like people talk about fruit and milk as being the same as donuts, pizza, and chips. And they're not!

Yes, I overate carbs when I gained all my weight. But I also overate with hamburgers, fried chicken, cheesesteaks, peanut butter, and other things that aren't necessarily high in carbohydrates.

I just think posts like this send the wrong message. All carbs aren't bad. Is anyone seriously going to tell me that we shouldn't be eating fruit?

ETA: And I totally disagree that nutritionists always tell us crap! Talk about a generalization and a slam against the experts! I think the problem is that we didn't listen to nutritionists back before surgery or we cheated and didn't get results. At least that's what I did.
I know vegetarians who eat brown rice,  beans, dairy fruit, etc.....many are MO....This is not to say that isn't a "healthy way to eat....for some it may be fine....but for many "carb sensitive folks...brown rice, all-bran cereal are not "better" choices!  I was diabetic for 12+ years....switched to eating "whole grain" about 6 years ago......when I ate "organic brown rice" from Whole Foods....my blood sugars would spike.....just as if I drank a soda....sometimes over 350!  The only difference was it did it slower .....maybe 1/2 an hour as opposed to 10-15min.
Again I am not against eating "healthy" carbs....like you mentioned....but for MANY of us...... even those "healthy" carbs do not work!
I would also "venture" a guess that MOST nutritionist....still advocate "old school" thinking.....like low to moderate fat (<30% of cals) and moderate carb intake(45-65% of cals) and 2200- 2800 cal per day This does NOT work for MO people.  Got to any regular "dietary guidelines" website......the numbers are way off for us!  Bariatric nutritionist are more educated on "our" needs....even some of them still "don't get it"  It is hard for them rethink the info they were given in school.  How many "medical professionals"  Have no clue about WLS   even the RNY which has been the "gold standard" for several decades.  There is a nutritionist on here (sublimate) ask her about the info she got while attending school.....If she got that info.....safe to say MOST other nutritionist have the same info!  Of course there will always be exceptions.....but I go with what is true for the majority (over 50%)
Your personal experiences with brown rice making your blood sugar rise is a very specific reaction for you. But you know that when I'm talking about brown rice being healthier than a danish, you kinow what I mean! I'm NOT talking about blood sugar -- and neither were  you initially, either. I thought we were talking about carbs in general. You know that brown rice has other nutrients going for it, and so do a lot of other carbs. These are GOOD things.

Two different bariatric nutritionists I spoke to here in town, both at different centers, told me the same thing. That there's nothing wrong with eating carbs. Protein should come first, of course, and they wanted me to avoid white carbs and sugar. But no one ever said fruit, milk, and beans, etc. are bad for us. Yet,  you're here telling us exactly that. Or am I completely misunderstanding you?

Not that Jim needs me to respond for him, but carbs leading to blood sugar/insulin response leading to weight gain  is exactly what he has been talking about the whole time.

I got exactly the same advice from my dietitian who specializes in bariatric nutrition.  And, it's working for us, right?  Pop-Pop

I don't understand this post. Are you being sarcastic? What does "pop-pop" mean?

I see no problem W/ 'healthy"  carbs I.E......vegatables,  fruits, etc......but we are not talking those carbs!  I'm talkin about stuff that MOST of us CAN NOT process "Normally"  refined processed carbs...and sugars.   These are the MOST addicting and damaging to our bodies!  But....as for me   too much of ANY "good" thing could be a problem!  Too much of "healthy " carbs like  fruit can get us into trouble too!  if you are insulin resistant and your body does not process simple sugars properly...... like MOST MO people....eating too much fruit IS a problem.  I'm sure your nutritionists  limits your intake of fruit?   or am i wrong? ....If i was to eat fruit ALL day long bananas, grapes, melons,  nectarines...etc....I would be in trouble.  So if your nutritionists are limiting fruit.....is it really that "healthy"  too much of a good thing is NEVER good.  I am a big believer in "moderation" W/ all foods.  Limiting "refined" carbs is most important.  I eat veggies everyday.....i would never say they are NOT good or don't eat them at all....yes the are carbs!  I'm not "anti-carb"  My point was for MOST  of us.....we will need to limit our "carb" intake (in particular "bad" carbs)  if we want to remain "healthy" for life!  some of us are under the "impression" that we can/will be able to eat "normally' at one point.  I say again MOST MO people are NOT NORMAL in how their bodies process nutrients...."bad carbs" in particular.  LOWER carb (NOT NO carb or VLC!) is what will help the MAJORITY of us be successful long term!  Hey if you do great eating fruit, and beans, and veggies.....more power to ya!  You are not alone....many successful WLS do just that.    I'll bet you still do "lower"  carb/cals than a regular "normal" person(<130 carbs.. < 2200 cals) person....correct me if I'm wrong?  If your values are higher than this.....you are a "rare"  WLS person indeed

While there is nothing "wrong" with eating "carbs" it ALL boils down to YOUR body.  Like Elina posted...YOUR mileage MAY vary, but for ME in my 3+ years out I have played with "good" carbs and "bad" carbs and learned that "bad" carbs make my carb cravings greater say after a meal.  My "good" carbs like brown rice or oatmeal if I have ONE meal with them then the next DAY I'm craving.  As we go on this journey everyone has to SEE what works for them not just duing the losing phase but LONG term...bottom line we aren't in this to lose weight but to KEEP it OFF.

i think everyone is different in how affected they are by carbs

I rode 10,000 miles one year on my bike and didn't drop a pound cuz  i was trying to eat carbs like an endurance athlete.

for me, milk & bran ceral are gonna set off the carb monster within and act as a gateway drug to the harder (processed) drugs :-)   Some fruits can do this for me too.

It was more miles than I put on my car .... cycling was my cross addiction the last time I made a huge effort at losing weight.   I totally don't believe you are a big P***Y, you just haven't found your exercise cross addiction.  And it was like everything, you work up to it, I rode 4000 the first year, 6000 the second year and 10,000 the third year.  I dropped some weight the next year cuz I stop trying to kid myself that I was "normal" and ate less carbs :-)

My exercise cross-addiction is the "donut dunk-n-curl"  kinda like a regular curl.....but only from the coffee cup to your mouth!  I walk 6x a week..4-5 miles.....weight training another 3x........works for me  at the moment........I want to get back to playing sports like when I was younger.
