What kinds of meds can you take after VSG?

This was not something I had given any thought to when considering the different types of WLS.  My mother had a stomach stapling proceedure in the 80's, and RNY in the 90's.  She had many difficulties from the different WLS and was very sick.  Those have made me shy away from the thought of RNY but now I am reading that there are some meds you cannot take after WLS, nobody ever told my mother she used to be on many different pain meds, GERD meds and had issues with IBS in the end.
I have a back injury, and it has created osteoarthritis and I have degenerative disc disease.  My back goes out on occasion and I am put on flexeril and an anti inflamatory, were military so it is usually a strong ibuprophen.  What if any types of meds must I avoid if I decide to go with VSG?

I have severe arthritis.  I picked VSG with my surgeon because I will be able to go back on my naprosyn in about 3 more weeks.  naprosyn is a non steroidal anti inflamatory. I had not realized just how bad my knees were until I was required to be off it one week prior to surgery.  By day 4 I was a total cripple.  It was an eye opening event.  I am off of them now, and basically using the narcotic pain med given for the VSG to control both kinds of pain.  My surgeon knows this, and approves, as does my ortho doc.

There is no way to know that I won't get an ulcer from the NSAIDs down the line, but I could have gotten one with out the surgery too.  I will have to take a PPI in addition to the pepcid I am now taking, but it is a small price to pay.

I lost over 30 lbs pre op, and hope to lose another 70, then I can have my first knee replacement.
I would have some very extensive conversations with your pcp, your ortho doc and your surgeon !

Thank you, I will definitely add that to my list of questions for her.  I have been going thru all of the boards gathering info and questions to ask when I see her.  Lately I have been having trouble with my knees feeling so stiff when I get up after sitting for awhile.....never thought about a knee problem though.  I guess I have another question for her then.  Thank you very much for your help, I am learning so much on these boards, things I had not given much thought to before.  Thank you

I take an NSAID, diclofenac sodium, for osteoarthritis.  I have been off about 3 weeks now, but my surgeon said I could start back soon.  I have my 1 week post op appt on Tuesday and may get clearance then.  I have found that even with losing the first 17 lbs it has made a difference in my knee pain.

One of the reasons many choose the VSG is for the ability to actually take NSAIDs if they need them. My surgeon recommends avoiding them if you don't have to take them since they can cause ulcers (and is generally a good rule to follow even if you haven't had WLS, to be honest) but they aren't absolutely forbidden. I would take a PPI with them if I had to take them myself. Thus far, I have not heard of any medication that is absolutely forbidden with the VSG, though who knows what may crop up in the future. VSG patients have a normally functioning stomach (minus some intrinsic factor which requires us to take certain vitamin supplements since we can no longer fully absorb them from food), it's just a lot smaller. We also do not typically malabsorb but there is one member who definitely malabsorbs protein.

Of course, one of the great side-effects of my surgery is how much less pain I'm in now than I was, with the removal of 100+ pounds of strain on my body. My knees, hips and lower back are all benefiting from my weight loss so far.
