Where are you getting your Potassium from?
My surgeon just started me on prescription potassium yesterday(20mEq/day) because my levels were down to 3.4. I'm not worried about getting too much as my kidney function is fine so I should just flush out any excess. I still plan on following up with my PCP in a month to check my levels.(always important w/ potassium). I eat only protein right now w/ very few veggies( no room!) So there are very few sources in my diet.
This is an excellent thread.
I am pre-op, but I might add that last summer I got a UTI and during that time I ended up in the hospital, (taken from my Dr's. office by ambulance) and it turned out that my problem was dehydration and low potassium. My muscles got so weak I could not get up from a chair, get in or out of bead and finally I couldn't walk very well.
For after surgery I do plan on making the broth and drinking the V8 and the high potassium foods as possible. Havinging a large enough enough stomach to be able to eat foods with adequate potassium is one of the reasons I want my surgeon to use a larger than 34 Bougie. He won't agree to it as the only thing that seems to interest him is weight loss.
Thank you for the high potassium broth ideas. From my experience I know this issue should be taken very seriously.
I was able to talk my surgeon into using a 40 bougie instead of a 34 or 36. I told him I felt more comfortable with the fact that there are less occurences of leaks and strictures with a slightly bigger bougie and that I realized it was only a difference of millimeters. He immediately changed it on my chart with those statements... You might want to try that? Besides the fact that it is your body and you have to be willing and able to live with it. It's not all about weight loss, it's about your life long term and short term in regards to healing.
I'm sorry you had such an episode with low potassium, just glad they caught it as most times they think it is your blood sugar levels and when they come back normal they chalk it up as "Oh you must be coming down with something"... That's been my experience anyway! *Giggles*
