VSG and Ulcerative Colitis

Hi Peggy

Thanks for responding.  I was starting to wonder if there was anyone like me out there.

I have had ulcerative colitis since I was 16 years old and an ileostomy since I was 25 - I'm now 43.  I went to my orientation meeting a few weeks ago and it appears as if I'm the first ileostomy patient since this program has started. . . . .or since the bariatric nurse has been at this program.  Anyways, the nurse is a wonderful woman who will go out and find what she needs to know for me. . . . .but in the mean time, I was wondering if their has been any unique challenges having an ileostomy can pose for this kind of surgery.  I have a large scar on my belly and am wondering if the doctor could go in laproscopically with you or did you have to be opened up?  Did you originally want a RNY but had to have a VSG because of malabsorption or dehydration issues.  Anything that you can give me a 'heads up' to, or have experienced, or can tell me things that you  didnt' expect to happen but did,  would be of value to me.  Are there any particular questions that I need to ask the doctor/surgeon.

Thanks

Sorry so long to get back with you.  I started back to work full time about three weeks after the surgery and am quite busy!

I have/had high blood pressure, Crohn's disease, Barrett's eusophagous, etc, and I also had two surgeries previous to the vertical sleeve. The doctor was able to perform the surgery  laproscopically.  He also repaired a hernia and took a liver biopsy at the same time.

We decided on the sleeve because I have no large intestine left and this surgery seemed like to best fit for me nutritionally.  I am about five weeks out and have lost a total of 43 pounds to date.  The last week is my "stall" week apparently because I am not losing, and fluctuating up and down a half pound per day.  Hopefully, this too will pass!  QUICKLY!

Good luck and I don't regret the decision I made at all!  It was time for me to start thinking about myself and getting healthy!
