Question about weight gain
I have seen a lot of RNY posts about significant weight gains after a couple of years. I haven't seen the same kind of posts on the sleeve board. I am wondering if anyone who has the sleeve has had a big weight gain. In the past have always saved my clothes when I have lost weight, knowing the inevitable would eventually happen and I'd be back in my 18's or 20's, but now I'm giving them away as I lose weight because I'm hoping this time the weight loss is permanent. As I see the posts from those who have regained their weight, I'm rethinking whether I should really give away all the clothes. I really feel like it's under control now, but I've felt like that before.
Well, I gave away all my clothes.
The odds are in our favor this time and I don't want to have a fallback position. It's easy to accept a 5-10 lb. regain if you don't have to buy a whole new wardrobe and I don't intend to accept it, if it happens!
I do think RnY is the surgery that has the most issues with regain. That seems to be what my surgeon's practice sees as well. The VSG people and DS people have a much smaller regain in comparison.

I have not seen a lot of people with big regains with the sleeve....that doesn't mean it doesn't happen, just isn't something I have seen. My NUT informs us at our preop session that we are to give away everything as soon as it is too big- she insists getting rid of the clothes and the idea of failure is a big part of our success. I have literally given or thrown away every article of clothing and shoes I owned, and I enjoyed every second of it!
The elimination of the pylorus and the creation of the stoma causes reactive hypoglycemia in many RNY patients that eat carbs or sugars regardless if they are prone to dumping or not.
Dr. Mitchell Roslin of NY wrote a paper where he stated that he believes the hunger caused by rapid blood sugar drops is the primary reason that RNY patients have regains.

My opinion is give them all away. If your head is in the right place and you truly want to lose the weight enough to do the surgery you will be able to work the surgery to maintain your loss.

I will be two years out in the Spring and once I hit a Size 6 I have never went back up in Size. I have easily maintained. If I feel like I am gaining or my clothes are getting tight I am just extra good for a few days and bump up my cardio. I will admit that the whole experience has been a lifestyle changer for me. I eat a lot healthier than I ever did before, I obviously eat less and I move a lot more! I can't imagine gaining a significant amount of weight, I know what to do to stop it and I weigh often to keep myself in check. I don't obsess if the scale goes up and down a few lbs anymore, I realize it is normal. I never let myself hit 145 and that seems to work for me! HOpe this helps, Z

I haven't had a "big" weight gain, but I have tested the water. When I got to my original goal - I had a few days where I didn't follow the plan. I had a lot of candy, breads, and fried foods. When I say a lot.... it wasn't a lot at one time, but a few days of grazing.
We have to be careful, because, over a short period of time we can eat a good bit of volume. I have gained as much as 10 lbs. It came back off very quickly, but it was a big wake-up call that I have to stick to my new lifestyle. The great part of it all was that I found that I didn't like how a felt at all after eating the bad things.
