Swollen feet and ankles

My feet and ankles stay swollen (Edema).  The doctor gave me Lasix (diuretic) 40mg to take one a day but, it doesn't seem to work anymore.  I used to run to the bathroom every 15 minutes or so when this medication did work, but not anymore.  I have an PCP appt in a couple of days, but I need to do something in the mean time.  My feet are swollen and they sorta ache.  I wear flip flops all the time.  I can tell you flip flops and swollen feet definitely isn't a good look.

Any suggestions on what to do to alleviate this?

When that was happening to me they diagnosed it as lympedemia.  The water pills have eased it though.  The swelling has abated quite a bit but it is still very tender.

Hi Rosebud,
I'm not too familiar with lymphedema. Were you taking Lasix?  Did you find the swelling went down as you lost weight or has it stayed the same?  I found that this condition has worsen as I've gained weight.

I had the swelling too and as I gained more weight it worked it's way farther up my legs into my thighs and just prior to my surgery even my belly and vaginal area had become swollen...I was also taking 40mg of lasix which had me peeing plenty but the swelling never seemed to subside...it became very painful and I was buying longer jeans to cover my feet in flip flops because it looked so gross...I don't really know the solution but I do know that 8 days out from getting sleeved that ALL my swelling is gone...I have a little saggy skin on my ankles and they look sooo skinny because it's been so long since they weren't swollen...I also know that pre-op sometimes I would go swimming, well playing in the water...lol...and the swelling would go down alot temporarily...so maybe trying to soak them if you don't have the option of taking a dip would help...other than that I can only suggest increasing your activity and watching your sodium intake.  Hope you feel better soon...I know what you are going through!

 Aloha-
Getting off your feet and elevating them might help. I agree with the water therapy- the support  of the water helps circulation, I was so buoyant when I was heavy that the water felt like heaven. Try an aquasize class or even walking laps in the pool. Avoid sitting with crossed  legs. Avoid all sal****ch the processed foods, they are very high in sodium! If lasix is not helping eliminate excess fluid, your doctor might want to switch you to another diuretic ( hydrochlorothiazide eg). The weight loss will help!
Good luck- XOLori

I would get fitted for compression stockings ask doc first.. No sodium period and elevate your legs.   Make sure you are drinking plenty of water on the Lasix. Eat bananas to prevent cramping.  Watch you don't cut or get a sore on the swollen parts.  You leg will develop an ulcer and will not heal, very painful..

Maybe your body is saying you've lost a **** load of weight and is taking a break.  A few weeks to chill and then it'll kick back in and away you go.  What is it like a 100 pounds in 2 1/2 months!  Wow.  I have confidence in you, you've done sooo well.
