LAP BAND VS VERTICAL SLEEVE
I had VSG almost a year ago. I reached goal less than 8 months after my surgery. I am now maintaining easily (to be honest, I have struggled a bit to not lose anymore weight - but that seems to be getting better now - I am pretty easily maintaining my current weight now). I haven't had any complications or nausea or reflux problems (some people do). Since surgery, the only things I can complain about are:
1. I had a bit of diarrhea at the beginning
2. I get constipated sometimes (but I was like that before surgery)
3. At the beginning, it really really sucks being able to have only liquids and then purees. It's downright depressing - but soooo worth it.
I don't regret getting this surgery for a second - ever.
I do remember reading one post on this forum from someone who had the surgery years ago and lost a lot of weight - certainly over 100 pounds - but then gained back about 40 pounds. I'd hardly call it a failed VSG - but I do remember reading that post.
I eat whatever I want to. I don't think there is an average weight loss. It depends too much on your starting BMI. I didn't look at the others' answers - but I'm sure someone would have listed the possible complications - so I won't bother with that one.
Best of luck with your decision! Personally - when I decided on the VSG, I was weighing it against RNY. I went with my surgeon's advice and got VSG. There's a lot to be said for listening to an expert on the subject - in this case, your surgeon...

You will also find with the VSG that your hunger is depleted. It may not completely go away, but when the stomach is removed, so is a lot of the ghrelin, which is the hunger hormone. I could not imagine feeling hungry like I did pre op, and not being able to eat...Like with the band. I really think the reduction of feeling hunger is the best part about this VSG. I still get hungry, but I don't think about food 24/7like I used to.
I absolutely love my sleeve. I am healthy, and I am happy. And I wont have to worry about slippages, or any other complications...seeing I am over a year out, complications are behind me. I really wonder how many of those banders are going to have to have more than one surgery. How long is that foreign thing inside your body going to last? Some how I doubt that someone that is say, 30, is not going to have to have that band replaced at some point. We all have normal functioning bodies....just smaller tummies....can't ask for anything better in my mind!!!

When I first got the band I thought about the complications but figured it was up to me to make it work, I didn't really think of the mechanical issues that could come with it or the issues I would have even getting the doctors the believe that there were any issues to beging with. Live and learn I guess. I'm glad I have this opportunity now. Thanks for your post! :o)
