Years ago I injured my knee and it started my weight problems for the most part. Over the years it has progressively gotten worse and now I am at 42BMI and can hardly climb the stairsdue to my joint pain. I have also developed gout, and other foot problems which cause almost constent pain and sleep apnea.

I will have the surgery soon and hope that it will help with all of my medical issues, but I would like to hear from others who have/had these problems and whether it has helped.

Thank you

Kelly

Well Kelly although I am only 1 week post-op, I believe my knee and back know that I will not stand for any more pain. My knee (thank God) hasn't hurt since I took my first "stroll" around the Unit in the hospital....I swear before, well I went shopping with my sister in Walmart and had to take the electric cart. That is a HUGH difference to me.

Now I am not tempting fate and going out to train for a marathon but one fact I have seen many times is, "for every pound lost you take 18 pounds of pressure off your knees." My knees can tell.

As far as sleep apnea - well I am still sleeping in a chair because of some surgery belly soreness (can't lay flat yet) but again last night (3rd in a row) I sleep very soundly for about 5 hours.

Hang in there and keep asking questions. This site is a godsend and the people here are my angels. It will all come together Kelly.....just believe.

Peace, Eileen

YES, there is hope!  I'm hoofing it around on walks with barely any pain, whereas before, taking a walk was out of the question -- arthritic knee that has had surgery, arthritic hips, messed up lower back, etc etc.  Stairs were a nightmare, and today I climb a flight or two with very little difficulty.  I also, just last week, packed up my CPAP machine and have been sleeping like a baby.  My gouty big toe has not flared once since surgery.  Most of these problems were caused by obesity and bad food choices and, by golly, getting weight off helps!  Best wishes!    --Dorothy

Thanks to both of you for your upbeat comments and the support. Last night was pretty bad. I am not on a CPAP or other breathing device and last night I awoke several times with an impending feeling of doom and out of breath. It really rattled my cage. I can not wait until my surgery date!

I am 11 days sleeved and I have felt a big difference in my knees.  I have had several surgeries with knees and trouble with foot pain and gout and everything else you have mentioned.  I am down 16 pounds and I feel 100% better and I am not always thinking of a nap now.  I don't need to sleep during the day, or when I get home.  I am freezing though, I guess I am losing some of my insulation.

I am sleeping better at night.  Vivid dreams since surgery, but they are going away too.

Good luck, you will feel so much better.

I had real problems before surgery with Plantar Facietis (sp?) ..(heel spurs) I haven't had one once of pain.  I also had a ton of back pain and it's gone too.

Your health will improve after ur surgery and begin losing weight. It wont happen over nite, but just hang in there. Im not going to say everything will go away, but losing weight will take some of that pressure off of ur joints. Eating healthier will also improve the Gout. I have had that in the past and its awful. You have to learn to avoid the foods that cause a Gout outbreak.
As for the Sleep Apnea....mine has improved alot. I still use a CPAP and will for a long time Im sure...but Ive been able to decrease my pressure already.. Im hoping one day that I can throw the machine out the window lol
So hang in there...
big hugs

I have really bad arthritis in both my knees. I have lost 18 pounds so far and my knee pain is nearly gone.  Still struggling with stairs but I expect  that will get better with more weight loss.   I was taking A LOT of pills for pain Naisds, now I am only taking them occasionally.

It will get better just hang in there.

Kelly Check out my profile.  You sound like me!  I had sleep apnea, foot problems, knee pain, joint pain/Arthritis & fibromyalgia pain.  After losing 80 lbs with VSG, 15 lbs pre-op diet and another 24 lbs I am so much better.  My Pain level was a 8 ( on a scale of 1-10)  most days.  now it is probably between 0 and 2 depending on what I am doing.

My sleep apnea is gone, (I need to go in for a overnight test to be sure), but I stopped snoring when I'd lost about 45 lbs after surgery... I actually can go to sleep and wake up refreshed in the AM (if I let my self get the 8 hrs of sleep I need!!)  The problems with my foot (bones moving, arthritis, spurs etc...) much better.  If I go without my orthotics my feet can hurt, but nothing like before

My joints feel better, but I have permanent damage, exercise really helps, getting the weight off makes exercise so much easier!.  I would be doing better  but I fell and have been recovering from that, sure am glad I was 119 lb less at the time of the fall!!

Also brought my BP to a normal level (was borderline high)

I still have high cholesterol.  I am starting to focus on getting that down. Losing weight can help alot of issues.
Good luck!
