The nutritionist at my bariatric center specifically named Viactiv for me to take, so that is what I take.

Yea, I agree, we don't have absorption problems, so we shouldn't have problems absorbing the calcium. I think they just give generic info with info for the RNY. My surgeons office did that too, but I was told it didn't matter for us. Saying we should have citrate, does that mean everyone else should too? We have a working stomach just like everyone else, our is just smaller.

What you need in a calcium is maximum absorption As a consumer looking for the most absorbable calcium available, you’ll find that “pre-chelation” is the key. Pre-chelation means that the calcium and magnesium in our Cal-Mag product has been bonded to protein molecules, aiding uptake, and boosting absorbability by 40% to 50%. Because Cal-Mag is chelated before it enters your system, you take less and get better results. Most other calciums use simple “chelation”, by adding aspartic acid or some other agent to the capsule, hoping the calcium will chelate in the gut. The absorption of this inferior method will depend on your particular digestion, and i**** and miss at best. 3 superior forms of Calcium and Magnesium: Cal-Mag provides a special combination of the 3 best forms of Calcium and Magnesium, Aminoate, Glycinate and Citrate/Malate, to tremendously increase the solubility, absorption and utilization. Disease thrives in an acidic environment... Unfortunately, many people have overly acidic pH levels-the environment where diseases thrive– because of today’s lifestyles. The consumption of excessive sugar, and convenience and pre-packaged foods containing harmful chemicals, additives, and detrimental hydrogenated oils cause the system to turn acidic. But, taking a highly absorbable Calcium can help! HOPE THIS HELPS I WOULD OF COURSE STILL EAT THE CHOCOLATE WHY NOT!! KARLA

I had heard that you need magnesium with your calcium to better absorb it.  Also Vitamin D.  Not sure if the Viactiv has those or not.  I will have to look. My nutritionist was looking off the RNY info because she hasn't updated for the sleeve yet.  My doc has not done a whole lot of sleeves so far.  But he loves them so she better get ready for more patients.

Cool, you're the 2nd Davis patient that has posted today (or you might have been the first, I just came to yours 2nd. lol). I heard there was going to be a sleeve on the show this season. I think it's cool that they are now doing this surgery, hopefully they will show one and get the word out on how great it is. Teresa edited to add that I know viactiv (or the ones I get) have vitamin D in it because I was told we need it to absorb calcium. I never heard of having to have magnesium

I told someone on the forum the other day that the  only reason I think they haven't shown a sleeve yet was because the show is mostly taped at Methodist Hospital.  If you are a self pay it is cheaper to use University General Hospital. (And most of us are still self-pay) Then I saw a glimpse of UGH on one of the shows.  Maybe they will film a few more there.  Dr. Davis really likes the sleeve.  I would think that he would want to get the word out.  No one I have ever talked with even knows about the sleeve.  I have had to educate my doctors on the procedure. Dr Davis encouraged me to get the sleeve since I was self pay and could choose.  I told his bariactric co-ordinator that I was lucky that my insurance wouldn't pay because now I get to choose the best procedure for me.

That's how it is at my surgeon's office too. If you are self pay you have it at Vista, where the others are at Doctors hospital. Around here, the sleeve is starting to be more well known. When I first got it (9 and 1/2 months ago), everyone I talked to (including doctors) had no idea what I was talking about. Now, I'm finding more and more who know. The Dallas area is booming with sleevers. lol My surgeon also encouraged me toward the sleeve. I went in thinking I wanted the band. I'm so glad I was talked out of it, especially after seeing all the problems the band people are having that come to our board. I feel so bad for them. Teresa
