I hope someone can help. My name is Mary Beth. I had my sleeve one week ago today. I noticed yesterday that my tongue is white. Never had a white tongue before. Has it happened to anyone else. I am a little weak, not tired and no more fever since I got home from the hospital  2 days ago. I am sipping on water but not getting much in and I have been getting in very little of my protein. I'm not in pain or nauseaus. I'm just sick of protein drinks, chicken broth, popcicles, etc.  Any suggestions???

I wrote a post about this about a week ago and there were plenty of people who chimed in and said they had the same thing. Apparently it's to do with the ketosis. I couldn't really scrape my tongue as I kept gagging but just brushed my teeth frequently and used mouth wash a fair bit- of course I then had a green tongue for a while. It is now improving. I have been on puree foods for almost a week. My brother came up with the idea of chewing gum to see if that would improve it and theoretically I think there's good logic in this idea but I am just not a gum sort of girl. As far as liquids go I was so glad to get the go ahead from my surgeon to eat puree's a little earlier than expected. Other liquid things I was allowed included vegetable juice (hate it), fruit juice, miso soup (yum) and drinking yoghurt. Not so much about losing weight in this liquid phase as it is about getting adequate fluids in that supply a variety of nutrients. Cheers Leisa

Hi Leisa,  Thank you sooooo much for the info. I am glad I'm not the only one. I was starting to get a little nervous. I sure want a speedy recovery with no complications. I plan on one more week of liquids. Maybe my doctor would let me start pureed foods earlier too. I can't wait to have scrambled eggs, cheese, yogurt, tuna fish and beans. It's the little things.  Thanks again, you made my day!  Mary Beth :-)

are u taking antibiotics?? it sounds like thrush/yeast...which is caused by antibiotics... but then again, it could be totally related to the surgery. Since i havent gotten that far yet, im not sure.  good luck!

Someone said a few days back that it has something to do with the liquid part of the diet. (combined with the ketosis).. when you're not eating any solid food to scrape your tongue off throughout the day.. Scraping it manually should help! And after you begin other food it'll probly get better.

best wishes for a quick recovery! Welcome to the losers bench!

Sounds like thrush.  Pretty common.  Basically a yeast infection of your tongue. Read more here. :) "Treating oral thrush in healthy adults If you're a healthy adult with oral thrush, you may be able to control the infection by eating unsweetened yogurt or taking acidophilus capsules or liquid. Acidophilus is available in natural food stores and many drugstores. Some brands need to be refrigerated to maintain their potency. Yogurt and acidophilus don't destroy the fungus, but they can help restore the normal bacterial flora in your body. If this isn't effective, your doctor may prescribe an antifungal medication."

Yep, mine was thrush... doc just called in nystatin (a liquid you swish around in your mouth) and it goes away......

Call the doc,it's common when you have massive antibiotics going through your system, like when you are in the hospital!

White tongue is also a sign of dehydration. So see if your doc would ok some sports type drink like gatorade.

Thank you all. I am dehydrated and not getting in much protein. I called my doctor and he wanted to see me today or tomorrow. So I will be off to see him tomorrow afternoon. I'm going to try to get better today than yesterday with my fluids.  MaryBeth :-)

I read about post-surgical/antibiotics candida infections being rather common...
I think it is a good idea to be sure and mention it to your doc.
