It probably depends on your doctor's diet plan also. I am on clear liquids for the 1st 2 weeks after surgery. Its kind of hard to get protein from clear liquids, lol. But i think once i start eating real food they don't want me drinking protein drinks anymore. I am sure just as long as you are getting the recommended protein they don't care how you get it :o)

I had a VBG in 1999; lost 70 lbs today have gained all that back plus 50. I am having a RNY revison on Tuesday. My weight begin to return within a year. Now... I did NOT use my tool to my best advantage. However, my staple line has come undone, the silistic has slipped, I have horrible acid reflux and am hungry all the time.

If anyone has had vbg done and has community health network in ct, please let me know. im worried insurance wont cover.... please help!!!!

I am not an expert but I believe it's because when you lose so much weight quickly, you also lose muscle. Protein helps you maintain or build muscle. And of course, muscle helps burn fat so you always want to try and keep all the muscle you can. If you don't keep up the protein, you will be exhausted. And I think protein drinks are an easy way to get the amount you need without upsetting your tummy with a lot of meat, eggs, etc.

I started at 475 March 2004. By 2008 I had lost down to 222 with the help of Weigh****chers in 2007. From 2008 until today I have gained back to 297 which was my weight whenI started Weigh****chers in 2007.
I would not recommend VBG for anyone who loves sweets. If your problem is strictly portion control you may be successful. However, I just love food in general including sweets, carbs and sugar. Unfortunately, those things do down and stay down very easy for me, whereas the foods I need to eat ie lean proteins, brown rice, brown pastay, broccoli, etc feel stuck and often come back up.
I'm currently in the process of seeking approval for a revision to DS.

The Verticle Sleve Gastrectomy is a restrictive procedure that cuts the stomach in the shape similar to a banana, thus creating a sleve. You lose weight due to having a smaller stomach.
The Verticle Banded Gastroplasty creates a small pouch with a staple line and a band is placed under the staples. You lose weight because the pouch only holds a small amount of food at a time and you'll feel full until the food passes through the band.
In both cases the intestinal tract remains intact and, there will be pouch/sleve stretching over time and you must eat a low calorie/low fat diet to maintain weight loss.

Neither. If you aleady have the VSG it's statistically unlikey you'd maintain long term success with either of these purely restrictive procedures. The reflux, vomiting and general discomfort of either the lap band or vertical band are terrible.

I had a VBG in 2005 was about 330 got to 200, the fact that food pushed it's way up no matter what i did, was so painful! Yet, here it is 5 years later and I am at 310 and getting a gastric bypass. IMHO a VBG and LAP band are NOT permanent. And I have heard countless stories about how with in less then 2 years, they have started to put the weight back on, and sadly I have even heard of one girl who got a Lap band and PUT ON 80 lbs not losing any thing! But ultimately decision is yours. My insurance at the time ONLY let me have a VBG, despite my pleas.

What is all the craze with Protein drinks? I thought with the vertical sleeve, there is no malabsorption. So why are Protein drinks so important? Really, I want to know cuz I don't like their taste so I've just been getting protein by foods. I am two weeks post-op.
