Topic: RE: From LAPBAND to Gastric Bypass
Hi Denise,
Thanks for your response. Yes, I would rather get the LAPBAND but insurance won't cover it--I have been through all the appeals processes. I do not have the financial means whatsoever to finance it myself and am depserate to lose this weight. I will take what you said into consideration and at this point, although RNY is not my first choice, it may be the only one I have.
I really appreciate your feedback!

I was on solid food 1 week out and I have had no complications. Some things just go through easier. Every surgeon is different thought so if you're real worried call your surgeon.
Hang in there!

Hi Kathy,
YOu are in the VBG board. If you are looking for gastric bypass or RNY info, come on over to the main board.

I am not saying this board, the VBG board, isn't a great place. I lurk here all the time! I was just suggesting that to find specific info on the surgery you are having, you should check out that board where you will meet a lot of gastric bypass/RNY patients!
I am a bit concerned that you don't seem happy with getting the RNY. This is a huge decision and as you know from your sister's experience, it has risks that can be devestating. It also has geat advantages, too, and I am not knockinhg the RNY at all. So far, I am thrilled, but then again, I went into it WANTING it.
Come post on the main board, ask tons of questions and make sure you want this.
The lapband is great and if you have your heart set on it, there are other ways of getting it besides insurance (if you have the means...loans, re-financing, etc).
There is a lapband forum here as well...I will pop over and get the link for you. A lot of people there were denied and found other ways to finance it. Post over there, too, and maybe someone has some info that could be of help to you.
Best of luck!
Hugs,
Denise

Hi Michelle,
I just typed a reply but it didn't go through...this may be a double post.
The main board is the board where most RNY patients post. We don't have a separate board, but most RNY patients use the main board as "home". I think the reason all the other surgeries have their own board is because the main board is somewhat overrun with RNY folks. That is my guess, anyway.
YOu will find a ton of good info there, I promise!

Louella,
Here is a great website detailing different kinds of surgery and their history. Info about the VBG is in Chapter 4. You can see where they "perfected it".

Mrs Mel!
I am almost 4 weeks out and still only on a liquid diet per doc's orders. I think eating solids like that is way too soon for 2 weeks out. But, if you are following what your doc said, and you aren't hurting you should be ok as the others said.
Question, how fast did you eat it? At this point, in my opinion, you should be taking extremely small bites, like the size of pencil erasers and chewing them 40 times each. And it should take you at least 45 min to "finish" eating.
I would ask the doctor how big your pouch is and start measuring your food to that amount. 1 cup is the equivalent of 8 oz which is a lot! My pouch is only 1.5 oz.
Even if you are able to eat 8 oz and be ok....it's likely sliding through the pouch and you are defeating the purpose of surgery. Either that or you are stretching out your pouch or you could cause a staple line disruption by not allowing enough time to heal before putting stress on the staples.
My advice, just take it slow and be careful!
Good luck

Topic: RE: 40lb gone :jump:
Sharon thank you for your reply. I had surgery 12 weeks ago and I have lost 40 lb so far. I have realy made some big changes and am working very hard my pouch is to big I think ( 8 to 9 oz ) but I am walking and watching my food in take because I am so afread of over eatting this thing and gaining or not dropping. It is very slow a lb a week if I am lucky I stay the same for a week or two and then drop 2 lb but I tell my self I am doing the best I can and I know I have done it all in the past so this is how it is my doc said I got the same size pouch everyone has but the have the RnY not the vgb so that how it is he thinks I have a very good surgery and should be greatful but I am not I am a self payer for the vgb and the insurance is paying for the other surgery I had at the same time but now the insurance is not going to pay for the outher surgery but the doc office said they will work on it but it is a big mess so I am a little upset and there is very little I can do . but I am not eatting over it an for me that is good . thanks for being there allyson
