Hi Indie,
Let me see if I can remember. It`s been 3 1/2 years for me. I wish someone would have told me depression and regrets were common right after surgery until about a month post op. I did`nt realize that I would still get hungry so soon after surgery. Tv ads nearly drove me up the wall.I never realized how many food commercials there were. I wished someone would have told me about the "honeymoon period". I think I would have tried harder to make goal if I had known that you will never lose as easily as those first nine months or so. I would definitely have it done again, although I might look into the lap band. Maybe. The health benefits was why I had it done in the first place. I had high blood pressure and was on meds for it. I felt bad all the time. My joints were starting to ache, I was sleepy alot during the day,got out of breath easily. Just felt like crap most of the time. Now I am off bp meds, I can exercise, I have a life now. I guess thats about it. Good luck.

Lakeea,
Hang in there. I am 3 1/2 years post op vbg and I remember feeling disappointed and wondering what the heck I was thinking. I did`nt weigh until I was 2 months out. I had my surgery July 18th and I went and bought a new scale Sept. 11, 2001. An easy date to remember because I was standing in line at a Tueday Morning Store and listening to people talk about what they heard on the radio. Anyway, In those early days, I had oatmeal for breakfast, I hate to admit this, but for lunch I had baby food meat and applesauce, and for dinner I had the meat portion of a lean cusine. I usually could`nt eat very much of it. The chicken entrees always made me throw up. I ended up losing 113 lbs. After the 8th month,I could eat a little more and never lost the last 25 lbs. But I was a happy camper anyway. Felt soooo good! Take advantage of these first few months and eat mostly protein, drink lots of water, and walk as much as possible. Good luck.
Topic: RE: I don't get it?
Hi Indie,
Hair loss happens for all sorts of reasons; vitamins, not enough protein, the surgery it's self can lead to hair loss (even if you do everything right). My choice to have a VBG was:
1. No malabsorption.
2. Reversable (I have a lot of cancer that runs in my family).
3. I am not a sweet eater or a big snacker, so RNY was too drastic for me.
4. I felt that changing the make up of my body that much was not natural (just for me, my opinion).
Remember that when you are choosing which one to have to look at the emotional reaction you have to them as well. Not just the weight loss part of it.
Hope this helps.

Hi Indie,
We VBGers do experience hairloss, but most people don't have problems with vitamin deficiency so long as we take our supplements. We can eat just as little as the RNYers so if people don't take supplements it is possible to become deficient in certain vitamins and minerals because we eat so little.
I hope this helps If you have any questions for me please feel free to email me any time!

Topic: RE: Tired All The Time
Hi Jacelyn,
I am cold all the time too!!! I don't experience the tiredness, but I am always cold and before I was so hot all the time it was ridiculous. I think its just because we have less insulation

Topic: RE: Puke Lady Here
Hi Heather,
I was also the Queen of Tossing. I think for the first 3 months I tossed up EVERYTHING I ate. I was super sensitive to any increased pressure in my pouch. I always craved orange juice, milk and broth during this time. I think it was the only way I could get an nutrients in. The other thing is to make sure you are taking your vitamins.
One thing that I remember early on was if I could just get myself to burp the nauseous feeling would sometimes go away. I would first try walking right after eating to encourage the burps. If that failed another tactic I utilized was to lay down after eating. I think it was all pressure related for me.
For me personally the sensitivity to my new stomach only went away with time. I am now 1.5 years out. I would say within the last 2 months I have noticied a significant difference in how food sits in my pouch now. I can actually eat without having severe to moderate discomfort. In the end I assume that my pouch is now just more "broken in". Not really sure.

Topic: I don't get it?
I have been researching the VGB procedure, and am looking to have it done as oppose to the RNY. HOWEVER, some of the reasons I was looking into having it done seem to contridict themselves.
I was under the impression that VGB patient absorb more of thier nutrients and vitamins better than RNYers. However it appears from some of the postings that VGB patience have most of the same problems as the RNYer when it comes to Malabsorption (hair loss, not enough vitamins etc..)
If anyone can answer this question for me, I would greatly appreciate it, I am STILL researching, but it doesn't hurt to get other perspecitves.
Thanks!
Topic: RE: Tired All The Time
Hi, I posted right before you about having no energy after having VBG surgery. I am cold all the time also which is weird because before surgery, I was hot and sweaty all the time. I have only lost 30 pounds in 5 weeks and was wondering what was causing the coldness and fatigue?
