Topic: RE: VGB vs DS
I'm still pushing for the DS. And still don't like the idea of an object in my body. The seminar I went to last Wednesday said that with rigorous activity, the lap band can even slip causing serious problems. They also told of the port being misplaced or moved and the surgeon being unable to find it or inserting the needle in the tube instead of the port itself. Also, with the cost of fills/unfills, trips to the office to have them done, and losing only 50% of your excess weight, I decided against it. The DS can also have severe complications and I have read about them while doing my research. However, I also learned that there are more complications with hip replacement surgery than with any other surgeries...more deaths too. Also, the top 3 complications (bleeding excessively, blot clots, and leakage) are not only the top 3 in WLS but in any surgery in general. So the DS isn't the one and only surgery that falls under complications. Malnutrition is preventable and easily solved if caught in time...which it wouldn't be caught or a problem if vitamins were taken everyday!! lol I know that there is a 30% of nutrition deficiency but since it's preventable, it's not at the top of my list. I know that anything can go wrong. But I also know that if you have a Grade A surgeon (like I do - Dr. Husted), and are young (I'm 24), and have no serious co-morbities (I don't have hypertension, high bloodpressure, lung problems, etc) - then you will be okay. Dr. Husted and crew at CCFOS, have .1% complication/mortality rate. And if I have come off too strong or cranky, it's because that this isn't the first time I've heard that the lap band may be better for me!!! lol It seems like the only person who thinks I'm an excellent candidate for surgery, is the surgeon itself and that's enough for me!!! Thanks so much for your info though!

Solid silicon is completely inert...it's not the same substance as the gel/fluid in the silicon breast implants which is neither solid nor inert.
The lap-band has be far the fewest dangerous complications. The DS can cause tremendous complications from malnutrition and cannot be fully reversed (when they do the sleeve gastrectomy on the stomach, they remove/discard the portion of the stomach stapled off, unlike the RNY where nothing is discarded.
If you want a real picture of how severe complications can be, please go to the OSSG_Gone_Wrong yahoogroups list.
In terms of the foreign object thing, do you have fillings in your teeth? LOL would you refuse a pacemaker? A knee or hip replacement? And hundred of metal staples...they're foreign objects as well.

Topic: RE: VGB or lapband???
The lap-band is the most current generation of restrictive-only WLS procedures, and it was designed to address some of the issues with the VBG. Adjustability is a big factor, and it's also less invasive. Regain is less of an issue and overall complication rate is lower. Very few surgeons are performing the VBG anymore.

Topic: RE: Not Losing and Getting More and More Depressed!!
If you're barely eating, that could be the problem right there. Your body might be thinking it's starving so is hanging onto every ounce for dear life. You need to eat enough to let your body think it's ok to release fat in storage.

Topic: Not Losing and Getting More and More Depressed!!
I'm getting more and more depressed about not losing any more weight. The first 50 pounds came off in 3 months and now in 6 1/2 months more, I've only lost another 10. I barely eat at meals and snacking isn't a real problem. I walk at least a mile a day too! I'm not saying I wish I wouldn't have had the surgery, but I do feel like I did when I was dieting! I just can't lose no matter how little I eat!!! The nurse keeps telling me to hang in there, but I get more and more depressed every time I weigh myself. According to the chart, I should have lost about 78 pounds by now. Granted, they only estimated that I would lose about 93 pounds, but that's still another 33 pounds to go and I'm NOT LOSING!!! I drink 48-64 ounces of water a day too, but that doesn't make a difference either. I ask myself if I should have had the RNY instead, but the nurse keeps telling me it wouldn't have made any difference. Any suggestions at all except for joining a fitness center, because that isn't an option for me?

Hi Lia,
Things do get better. For me, almost too much better. I am 3 1/2 years post op and I had lots of throwing up in the beginning. Could`nt hardly tolerate meat at all for almost a year. Just be careful and follow dr orders, especially this first year. Enjoy the weightloss right now. The "honeymoon period" only lasts about a year. I still can`t eat as much as I used to, but I can eat pretty normally now. I can even eat some steak now! It`s common to get a little depressed in the early months, but life will get back to normal. God bless.

Hi Lia,
I am guessing that you recently started eating solid food again. If I am correct about that it might have something to do with the nausea. I remember I had a really rough time with solid food in the beginning...in fact I still do to some extent. Foods of a softer texture tend to go down easier for me and I think for most people that is true. I am having a rough time getting my protein in lately and I try to stick to tuna salad and chili and things like that to get me through. If I really slow down and chew chew chew I find it much easier to tolerate eating solid foods...oh and I also measure to make sure I will not overeat and get sick. Right now it is all about trial and error, so u almost might expect to get sic****asionally. Still if the condition does not improve very soon please call your surgeon or PCP. Perhaps they can give you some meds to help you get through. Remember you are still pretty early out, so your body also might still be healing too.
Good luck to you and if you have any questions for me directly please feel free to email me
Big hugs,
Sara

Topic: Anyone else have this problem?
Had VBG end of Jan. Always feel nauseated, especially in the evening and about 3 or 4 nights a week, I throw up. I know I'm not eating too much. I've lost 36 lbs since Jan 24, but even water makes me nauseous. I'm not sure whether to call the Dr. or wait to see if it improves. I'm wondering if it will always be like this or if things will eventually get better?
Topic: RE: So.....
I went with the VBG because there were typically less complications in patients in recovery. Plus there is less surgical stuff done- the bowels and intestines aren't rerouted or anything like that...
i am happy that I had it done- even on the days when I have a hard time digesting stuff-
In 90 days I've dropped 75 pounds, gone down at least 2 sizes and gained so much more energy...
I would reccomend the VBG highly- so long as your serious about changing your eating habits after the surgery.
the VBG won't work if you don't change your habits- like no more overdosing on sweets or breads or soda-pop....
good luck.
