Topic: Does anyone have metal allergies and know of possible surgery complications
I have an appt. on May 4th to consult about gastric bypass, lap, RNY I believe it is called. Bear with me I am new. I have allegies to metal, earrings, buttons on pants (not that I have had those in years as it is all stretch pants now), etc. Even with 24 carat gold I would have small problems wearing earrings. I can wear my wedding ring though...but not much else. the surgery calls for tiny staples, titanium and stainless steel combination to close off the 2 parts of the stomach. One of my fears is allergic reactions. Has anyone else had metal allergies and still had surgery? How can they test for this etc? I have done searches but cannot find any information, just that MOST people do not have reactions, but WHAT IF a person did? Thanks for any information. I will of course ask the physician who will be doing my physical on the 4th. But I have been to pre-op meeting and the nurse gave me the same, I have never heard of that. answer. Maybe it would be fine. Just wondering if anyone has information? Thank you so much,

Topic: Surgeans in NY/NJ/CT/PA/MD? Compiling a list
I am compiling a list of surgeans in the NY/NJ/CT/PA area to send them information on the upcoming national seminar. Could you please give me the name of your surgean and the phone number and/or address? If you see your doctor already on the list, no need to add it. Also--if you have the name of the person who runs the support group-- that would help as well. Thanks-- and hope to see everyone at the convention! Karen

Topic: I WAS WONDERING
hELLO, I am wondering if anyone at 5 months post op felt like giving up. I feel like a failure. I am back to eating things that I shouldn't. They don't make me sick so I try again. I am so stupid. Why would I go under the knife If my mind was not 100% ready to change. The weight that I lost don't even make it worth while. I was really wanting to lose big in a short time. So I'm disappointed in wls and myself. I need prayers and if anyone else have been where I am please let me know what you did.

Hi Kim, Congradulations on your surgery The first few weeks are the worst part and then you will start to feel so much better! So hang in there and know that you will feel better very soon!!!! I am not sure what your doctor considers liquids. I would assume we are talking about full liquids and not just clear liquids, but if I were you I would call and confirm. Right now I bet you don't really want to eat anyway, so just make sure you stay hydrated. Sip, sip, sip I was on liquids for 2 weeks and I had milk, lite juices, crystal lite, strained soups and broth, jello, sugar free popsicles, No sugar added Carnation Instant Breakfast, and I tried a few protein drinks, but that didn't really work out for me because I couldn't find one I liked. If you have any questions for me or if you need someone to talk to please feel free to email me Hugs, Sara 356/266/175

Topic: RE: Help, I am gaining weight!!!
Hi Denise, I had the VBG exactly one year after you did. I must admit I am still smoking and I am almost afraid to quit because I fear weight gain. Please don't go back to the smoking though...it is so wonderful that you quit!!!!! I think the weight gain will be temporary for you. It happened to my mom when she quit too. She gained like 40 pounds, but she took it off and u will too Hang in there! Big hugs, Sara

Topic: Help, I am gaining weight!!!
I had vgb Sept. 17/03. Lost about 90 pounds after 8 months and did not lose any more. I quit smoking about 10 weeks ago and have gained 16 pounds back!!!! I am now 200!!! I don't really want to start smoking again, but I do not want to gain any more weight either. I had no trouble maintaining my weight for the past year,I get to the gym at leat 4 times a week. (That is about the best I can do because of time constraints) I have not really changed my eating habits. So the only real change is the smoking. Has anyone else here quit smoking and gained weight? Any advice for me?

Topic: RE: long time no hear!
Lakeea, please don't be down. Go over with your doctor what you are doing. Are you eating too much or high caloried foods? Do you have an exercise program that you are following religiously. Sometimes when you are at a plateau like this, counting carbs and keeping out breads, pasta, etc. really helps. I know it did me when I hit a plateau. Remember this 20 lbs is still a good bit. Some people start off slow and start speeding up and vice versa. Everyone is different. I know losing slowly is better for that hanging skin believe me. Make a journal and chart down what you are doing daily and take it in to your doctor. I am sure you will be losing more soon. Fretting will do more harm than good.
