I dont understand why a lot of the rny'ers that reply to post about rny vs vbg are soo negative. I is really starting to frusterate me to hear all of the "negatives" about vbg and how we will gain back our weight. It is just like adding fuel to my already food fobic mind. I am already scared of food and after reading some posts yesturday that rny'ers post about vbg and after reading some posts by people who have reverted to rny from vbg, I am absolutely terrified. My insurance company covered wls for 9 months. I dont know if they felt that they were paying out too much money for it but they decided to cover wls like in march 2004 and decided to stop covering it for the new 2005 benefits year. If vbg doesnt work, I CANT get a revision. I am now second guessing whether i chose the right surgery or not. I am losing pretty good. I have lost 66 lbs so far since july 26th. I feel good but when i read all the negativity about vbg i start second guessing myself.
Are you all okay with your discission for vbg vs rny?
Hi VJ,
I am happy with the VBG, but at first I selected the RNY. For me the RNY would be life threatening because my small intestine is too short to do the bypass, so the surgeon opted to do the VBG instead. I can totally relate to you because I know the RNY will never be a possibility for me and this is my big chance to lose the weight. To an extent it is scary, but motivating as well. I am just happy I was able to have any type of WLS because there are some people who cannot have it at all for many reasons. I believe the key is to do my best and think positively about reaching my goals.
Remember there was a time the VBG was popular and now its the RNY and maybe next year it will be the lapband or the DS, but really it's less about the surgery type and more about changing my relationship with food. Plus there are plenty of people *****gain with the RNY as well and anyone who thinks otherwise has blinders on. Of course there are cases with true mechanical failures of the surgery like staple line disruptions, but again that can happen with any surgery type. It's not about the surgery type, its about so much more than that
Don't worry too much about it because worry leads to stress and stress can lead too a slower weight loss or even reverting to old destructive behavior. Just know that you are not alone with your worries and is you ever want to vent this is the place to come and let it all hang out Take good care of yourself!!
Hugs,
Sara
I just had VBG, too - Oct 4. I am down 17 lbs. already. You say you're frustrated - think of this....you can still absorb calcium in a relatively normal way - RNYers cannot. You aren't restricted as far as anything you can absorb - if you get sick and need extra nutrients, you are good, RNYers may have issues with this. You made a good decision. You choose the least drastic of the drastic measures we both selected to get ourselves healthy. You are losing, so you must be seeing health improvements, as well. I think you need to pay attention to your body and not to the busy bodies who want to convince you that you didn't make a good choice. Your body says you're losing and you feel good - just keep doing what the doctors say to do and you'll be fine. Think good thoughts and email me anytime - Beth
Both surgeries are only a tool and we must be able to keep up the work to change your behavior. It's a nonending job. I know 2 rnys who are already gaining their weight back and just think how more invasive their surgery was. as I have said many times the vbg is the best think I have ever done. My year anniversary is coming up, I am at goal 140 from 257 and am feeling wonderdul. Because of deficiencies and absorption problems with rnys I would not have done anything differently. They also said you couldn't lose as much weight with vbg. I proved that wrongl
