I am seriously considering having this surgery as I am not fond of the RNY. The surgeon here only does the open so he can remove the gallbladder and hopefully, my appendix. Hey, while I am under, do a facelift, brow lift, fatten my lips, do some botox, etc. Ha! I am trying to maintain a sense of humor in all of this seriousness. I have read and researched for over a year and a half on having WLS. I do have one question that I have actually NOT thought about all this time. My logic tells me that the answer will be simply but I will let you inform me if you please. When you have lost the weight that you and your doctor have determined is for you, how do you maintain? My head says just increase your food intake alittle along with water. Am I close here? I only pray that my surgery will go fine and I have to put myself in the hands of God on this one. Thanks for any help that you give to me on this one. WhiteDover101

I am not at my "goal" weight yet. You are probably on track with the increase protein and water. However; from what I have read here it seems like maintaining is not a struggle of losing too much but gaining too much. My plan of strategy is to continue my recording of weight and food intake; to continue coming to this board for support; to make exercise a regular part of my life; and make sure I keep all of my "mental cookies" in order! Good luck for you on your upcoming surgery! Sharon Chute Open VBG 10.28.03 5' 3" age 37 start 340 ~~ now 225 ~~ goal 190 (hoping for less!) -115

I had my open VBG on April 19, 2004 and it is the best decsion I have made. I have been off insulin since May 17, 2004 and have dropped 60lbs. so far.I have not had a problem with my surgery, it has taken me a while to learn how to eat, I had to learn the right foods to choose and to take small bite and chew realy, realy well.As for the maintaing part I am not going to worry about that yet but alot of people have asked me that same question. I pray you will do well and I wish you the best in your new life and journey.
