VGB - Reversed/Revision?

I had the VGB done in 1988 and reversed i*****  I threw up all 8 years - every day -  and was miserable.  I remember that I lost around 90 lbs.  At first, I did not have any problems and then without warning everything I ate made me sick as a dog.  I finally got so frustrated that I had the band removed but the G.I. surgeon left the rest the way of the VGB.  I am now looking to get a revision?  I am not sure what revision I will be getting.  I had a EGD and my G.I. doctor said that I had like two openings going into my stomach now.  The original opening and the VGB opening.  I hope this time out things will be different.  I am seeking a Bariatric Surgeon - last time it was just a general surgeon with what I thought to have had a lot of experience with WLS.

I am waiting on a hospital in Kentucky and the Dr. John Husted to be certified a Center of Excellence because, I have primary Medicare and then Medicaid (Spend Down Card).  Medicare will only pay if it is a Center of Excellence.  From what I have researched Dr. Husted has a lot of Bariatric experience and that is what I want.  I hope how soon it happens - I am really pumped up.  I have been reading Dr. Garth Davis book regarding WLS.  I wish I lived in Houston, TX - I would have my surgery done with the Davis doctors in a heart beat.

I am very excited to have found this website (suggested by Dr. Garth Davis) and hope to hear from you guys soon.

I had a VBG April 2004.  I threw up pretty much everyday for 5 years.  I just had a revision done to a RNY on July 15, 2009 and am SO EXCITED!  I am losing again and I can eat!!!!  The VBG worked I guess cuz I lost 200 lbs but it was to the point where I was gaining weight.  I started at 450 lbs (when I had the VBG) and I got down to 232... gained back up to 262 and now I am back down to 228.  I highly recommend the RNY from VBG.  It was great!!!!

Good Luck to you!

Started my journey - 450 lbs (VBG)

VBG on 11/19/92
Thanks for posting Lisa,

I had a VBG in 1992 and am scheduled for possible revision to RNY in two weeks.  I had no problem with the VBG - I did vomit some in the beginning but it was just because I was eating too much or one of those sticky  "no-no" foods like soft bread, pasta etc.  I lost from 300 to 130 and was happier than I'd ever been in my life but then in 2002, for some reason, I began to gain.  Over the past 6-7 years I've gained all my weight back but this time (probably because I'm older) I have a whole slew of health problems - diabetes, back pain, high cholesterol and the most troubling - obesity hypoventilation syndrome.

I just spoke with my surgeon yesterday and will actually have to wait until surgery day to find out if I am a candidate for revision because of the type of mesh used in a hernia repair.  It is so nice to read your post that you are happy with your revision!  I hope to be here saying the some thing in a few weeks.

Good luck to all,
Mary

Thank you for your enthusiastic report.  I'm scheduled for the same procedure in two weeks and hearing from you has allowed me to get excited, instead of fretting the whole time.  I'm 53 years old and have out of control diabetes so I'm very anxious to have the revision to RNY.  I know I will monitor my eating habits much more closely this time, so I pray the RNY will help me maintain a more normal weight.

Again, thank you for your post!

Mary
