Topic: Do you know.......

Do you know......our founder, Eric Klein, created ObesityHelp back in 1998 and we've been the source of information, support and education for bariatrics since that time.

Do you know.....that ObesityHelp organized and hosted the first ever National Conference for pre-ops, post-ops, and individuals considering weight loss surgery?

Please join us as we celebrate our history with the OH community of 65 events in 26 states since 2004, and our 2013 Event on October 4-5, 2013 in Anaheim, California!!

Topic: Weather keeping you inside??

“Sometimes the weather makes you an insider. Here's how to break out.”

If winter snows, spring rains, blistering summers, or blustery autumn weather periodically finds you running for cover, you may start to feel isolated and inactive. Getting out to workout regularly fights the blues that creep up, not to mention the weight that inactivity breeds. To invigorate you further, hit the malls for a brisk-paced stroll and to window shop. Get involved in an adult sport: faux rock wall climbing, bowling, volleyball, racquetball, or swimming (all that can be done inside). You may even want to volunteer to coach or assist youth sports. Running alongside a group of 8-yr olds will get your metabolism in full swing. If you are really house bound, tackle a big cleaning project like cleaning the garage or even vacuuming can burn lots of calories if you do it with vigor. Use your imagination to find motivation for indoor activities

Topic: Take the first bite

“You have an elephant-sized goal. Here's how to take the first bite.”

We've all heard the old adage, "How do you eat an elephant?" (Pause for effect.) "One bite at a time." But then, you see those reality weight loss shows and there they are wolfing down huge pieces of the elephant each week. It makes you feel a little inferior on the other side nibbling away at your pachyderm. The key is time. If you can spend the amount of time they do focused on their elephant (4-8 hrs a day...yikes!) and can afford to be medically supervised while elephant gorging...go for it. If you can only do 30 minutes to an hour a day, small bites are for you. In time, the result is the same...no more elephant.

Topic: Out of sight, out of mind

“You can't seem to help yourself when you see food. Here's how to use that to your advantage.”

Out of sight out of mind may be the key for some when it comes to high calorie foods. Banning bags of chips and the cookie jar from the kitchen counter is a good idea, better yet to keep them out of the house completely, or at least make them hard to reach without effort. This is a good trick even for those who might not always think about their health or weight...like kids and husbands. The key is definitely to put healthy eats in plain sight. Have a fruit bowl on the counter to remind you that you have apples and bananas for a quick snack. When you open the fridge, have bags of veggies in full view. Baby carrots are so convenient and kids will eat them as quickly as chips if they're readily available when hunger calls.

Topic: You know you need to eat better

“You know you need to eat better. Here's how the cold turkey fits in.”

Loosing weight is one thing, but chucking all of your bad eating habits in one fell swoop may be a little unnerving. Start by making just a couple of replacements. Write down what you typically eat for one week and portion size (example: 1 cup mac n cheese, ¼ c green beans with 1 t butter, 1 fried BBQ chicken leg, 8 oz 2% milk). Now, write down how many calories for each item. It's a good education to know how many calories are in the foods you eat. Look at each item and see what is costing you the most calories. Now, come up with solutions. Can you replace a higher calorie item (fried chicken leg) for something with fewer calories (4 oz of chicken breast with skin removed with BBQ sauce on the side)? Can you eat half as much (1/2 c mac n' cheese) and can you substitute a lower calorie type (8 oz of 1% or skim milk for the 2% version)? Just making a few tweaks to your diet can save you hundreds of calories a day, which translates to pounds lost. Continue making changes to move toward a healthier diet over time. You won't need to go cold turkey, you just need to add it to your new healthy diet.

Topic: When to stop multi-tasking

“You are an expert at multi-tasking. Here's when to stop that.”

Hurry, hurry! Pick up the kids, take the kids to soccer, go to a church meeting, do some work when you get home...don't stop now! Watch some TV while you fold laundry, pick up the house and help the kids with homework. Did you remember to let the dog out, feed the fish, return phone calls, and check your email? Hurry, it's getting late! Make dinner while you clean the kitchen, sort through the mail and pay a few bills. Throw some dishes on the table and eat. STOP! Now it's time to slow it down. Focus on eating. Just eating. Realize what you are putting in your mouth. Realize how much you are putting in your mouth. Chew. Chew slowly. Enjoy. By just slowing down when you eat, you'll not only enjoy what you're eating more, you can eat less, and avoid eating things that you don't even like or want.

Topic: Any Dr. D. Spencer Patients?

I am scheduled for Roux-en-Y on 8-21-13.  Nervous, obviously, but excited for my new journey.  Just wondering if anyone was a patient of David Spencer?  He and his staff are really nice.  Just not sure what to expect come surgery day!

Thanks!

Amber
