Anyone in the NOVA area - where did you get your barium swallows done? I know it shouldn't this hard to find a place near Arlington that does them, but it is!
I was supposed to be using the place that is right across from my surgeon's office in Reston, but they told me they no longer accept Carefirst...

Pam: Thank you and yes that is what he says. I understand it, but I also think its unfair. I dont know if buying insurance would even be worth it since they would probably charge an arm and leg and then I would have to jump through hoops to get surgery im sure.

I am so sorry, that's the craziest thing I've ever heard of. The only reason I can think of is the complication issue, and how expensive it would be should they arise. Sorry I could not be of assistance, perhaps one of the other OHers will have more experience in the self pay area. Best wishes, Pam

Pam: I have literally begged Dr. S to take me as a patient, but he refuses to take self pay patients. I have been trying to convince him and his staff for years.

HI, you have one of the most highly regarded doctors in the state for this surgery right in your backyard, Dr. Bruce Schirmer at UVA. H e has done thousands of these surgeries and travels to foreign countries to donate his services to the underpriveleged. UVA is a teaching hospital and I found it to be top notch. I highly recommend a trip to Williamsburg to see Dr. Charles Wilhelm. I drive down from Richmond to see him - he did my 2 knee replacements. Best care anywhere and the nicest man, who spends incredible amounts of time with his patients. He also serves as team doctor for William & Mary football and several US Olympic teams. You will not regret the trip. Good luck, whatever you decide.

Congrats! I am in Charlottesville too and searching for a surgeon. I have been hoping for a long time now that Dr Schirmer would accept patients without insurance, but he still doesnt =(

This is the doctor that I originally picked as I am self pay and UVA does not accept self pay. He emailed me back from my list of questions and told me he has only done a little over 100 gastric bypass surg. I wanted to ask if you were at all concerned with that as that is why I am looking at other surgeons.
