Always throwing up and wretching...

Natalie... That is EXACTLY what is happening to me. I really can't tolerate anything except for full fluids. It doesn't matter how slow or how well I chew. if it is something that my pouch can't tolerate, I will throw it up and then foam at the mouth and wretch for hours longer. last night it lasted 5 hrs. When I would try to take pherergan for the nausea I threw that up too. I really didn't want to go to the ER cuz I knew they would keep me for fluids and possibly test for a stricture. I don't want to stretch my band out if I don't have to. It would be a waste of the surgery. Thanks for your response. It sounds like I am experiencing what you did. Big Hugs... Dana

Poor Dana, You are one of the unfortunate ones who cannot tolerate food at the early stages. I didn't have that experience, only had clear liquids for the first 4 weeks. When I started on soft foods, I was mostly very cautious. I found when I had an episode with food, I kept with warm liquids for the rest of the day, sort of babying the pouch. It does get easier with time, hang in there. Keep up the liquids and protein as much as you can, and worry about the rest of the food at a later date. Switch to broth and warm tea, what ever you can tolerate, to sooth a grouchy pouchy. Feel better soon, Carole

Thanks Carole, As long as i am losing this weight I will be happy to just stick to fluids because I feel no hunger. My doc wanted me to start eating regular foods since I was one month out. Once I start the vomiting, any and everything else I put in my mouth for the rest of the day will come back. I am going to just stick to liquids till my 2 month check up. That way I know I will not be exhausted like I am now. Thanks so much for your input. I am going to try the warm tea today. Dana

Aww, Poor Pukey Dana....I wish I could help you but like Nat said, meats are the roughest to tolerate. I have been very lucky so far. Just be careful what you eat...are you chewing it up good? Sometimes when I feel yucky a cup of hot tea helps...also the Papiya enyzmes help me too. Even with heart burn. good luck, Sweetie....Can't wait to see you again...maybe too much cruising on that new boat!!! Sea sick?? hehe..Love ya bunches. Hugs, Betsy

Hey sweet pea .. one thing I forgot to mention is that , I wish I had of had in the begining these little jewels .. PAPAYA ENZYME . You can get these at most any drug store . They are chewables .. and help to break down the food in our pouchies ... I wish to GOD I had these back when . Now when I get the HEEBIE JEEBIES .. I pop 4 in .. chew them up and most of the time it works .. settles Lucille down like THAT ! Give them a whirl .. see what happens .. I thought about you a lot last night after I went to bed and your post brought back a lot of memories for me .. Big hugs , Natalie

I dunno. I have a very different opinion than others. I do NOT consider puking NORMAL. I didn't puke early on after surgery at all and neither did Rich. Any throwing up we did was caused by eating too fast or not chewing something well enough. Personally, I'd pester the crap out of my doctor now. Throwing up often can lead to vitamin deficiencies because you aren't getting or keeping the nutrients in. I just gotta be different. Feel better, Kathy

G'morning Dana! Are you LITERALLY throwing up after EACH AND EVERY MEAL? If so, NO it's NOT normal and it's NOT part of the "process". Some adjusting with the types of food we can tolerate, how fast we eat it, how well we chew it, etc, comes with the learning curves of this surgery - but to say puking after EACH MEAL is normal, just isn't right. It's your body SCREAMING signs your way and you need to try to narrow down what it might be. IF you feel confident that it's not "YOU" ..ie, taking in too much air while you're eating? Not mincing it to mush, before swallowing - or plain, just having TOO MUCH. In your early stages, something as simple as 1 or 2 ounces, really can be too much! ...anyway, if you feel confident that it's NOT any of those reasons that's causing you to throw up, then get your doc back on the phone and tell him you want to be checked for a stricture. The problem with the constant barfing is that you're losing some much needed nutrients, vitamins and yep - probably even some of the bennies from your protien supps! UPCHUCKING is NOT LIMITED TO just what you put in your stomach that moment. So you may think you're keeping your protien levels at 80+, but how much of that is your body really retaining, minus the trips to the porcelain goddess? *I* was the "extreme" gastric bypass patient - not only was I a distal bypass, but I had what they call a "20 cc micro pouch" (size of a flash cube) ...which is smaller then the average pouch out there (golf ball/egg). Although I had MANY challenges my first 90 days, what went down one day, came up the next, I NEVER EVER THREW UP EVERYTHING, EACH AND EVERY TIME. Sorry - can't say it enough - that's your body screaming all kinds of clues/signs/messages at you. Could be as simple as you're eating too fast, too much, taking in too much air, etc, ......OR? Hope you feel better SOON! Hugs - Lei

yeah i think another huge factor is chewing your food REALLLLY well. Small bite sized pieces used to set me off...it still does on a blue moon. I think you should consult you doctor even if they "feel" its too soon, they arent the one praying to the porcelin god everyday. You need these foods and yeah the extra weigthloss is nice but its not to healthy to go even more extreme then we already have. Take care of yourself...
