Flat soda

Can you drink Flat soda if it is caffine free? I know you can't have carbonated stuff but what if it is flat? It doesn't sound too appealing but I think it would be a nice change once in a while from water, crystal light and tea.

I started having the occasional Diet Pepsi a few weeks ago. When I first open it, I put a very small amt in my mouth and let it fizz up. When most of the gas is gone I swallow. I have an excellent burping reflex, so any more than forms in my new stomach comes out immediately. I never get a drink finished, and after about the first 20 minutes enough gas is gone that I don't have to let it fizz in my mouth anymore. I am not recommending this for anyone! I am just relating how I handle it for an occasional change from tea, water and crystal light. I really enjoy diet green tea, which my doctor said was fine. Honestly, I was not told to stop the reg tea either. Coffee, cigs and sugar are the big bugaboos for my doctor, and I wasn't addicted to any of those. Once again--JUST MY STORY. I am not giving advice. Lois

Kathy, Before surgery, I stayed away from the caffiene, but still enjoyed sodas otherwise. After, my surgeon said we could only drink sodas that were poured over ice and left to sit till most of the bubbles were gone, in other words, flat. I tried it a couple of times and gave it up, can't stand flat soda, it tastes like laxative to me. I've tried non-flat sodas a couple of times, but the bubbles stayed in my pouch and hurt. I save a lot of money these days by not buying sodas, before surgery I was a diet pepsi addict, never having less than 3 a day. For a change, I try different flavors of herbal tea. I love apple cinnamon and mango and peach tea. Crystal light I don't drink much anymore because I've found aspartame increases my appetite. Carole

My Surgeon /dietican said abosolutely nothing with bubbles, forever. No beer, champagne, wine coolers, soda etc. Someone in one of my classes asked about flat soda and the answer was still no. I am a BIG tea drinker, so forgetting about bubbly stuff hasn't been that hard. I thought it would be the hardest thing though before hand I was like a 3-4 Pepsi a day person. In 19 mos I've had 1 sip of champagne, 1 sip of Diet Dr Pepper Cherry Vanilla and about half of a wine cooler. I guess since I am not used to the bubbles, it made me burp like crazy! Every doc / dietician has their own reasons why you can or can't do something. Mine said NO on bubbles forever, and a friend's doc said it was FINE. Soda and Beer are OK with that doc.

My nutritionist said flat, diet, caffeine free soda was okay. I like flat diet ginger ale (especialy when I have a bit of indigestion or nausea). Also flat diet sprite is not too bad. I'd stay away from the darker sodas because of the caffeine factor. Another liquid idea is V-8, get a little nutrition at the same time. I make mine with worcestershire and celery salt and a touch of tabasco so it's like a virgin bloody mary. Also, I'm allowed juice if it's half and half with water and it doesn't have sugar added. kathy, i drink soda but what i do is either leave the bottle open on the counter so it goes flat or i fill a glass with alot of ice and let it sit. the ice waters it down and also makes it flat you dont want one of those gas bubbles i had one before i took a drink of soda to much and too quick i felt like i was going to throw up and all that came out was one huge burp!! lol i dont want to do that any more.. but rememeber water water water it is so much better for you. and the occasional soda(flat). hugs, holly
