HELP!!! Hole in old stomach
Just had 3rd EGD in 4 weeks today. Have a huge ulcer, stricture and now a fistula. I've been dilated twice now and today when he did it he comes back and says how I have a hole on the side of the pouch going into the old stomach. Anybody know what this means? Hear of this happening to anybody else? Don't check out profile, haven't updated in months. Other than that I'm 13 months out, lost past goal, have gotten to 109 from 230.
Thanks for the help.
Lori
The hole going from the pouch into the old stomach sounds like a staple line disruption. There is a line of staples between (since you weren't transsected - some folks have the stomach physically separated from the pouch) the old stomach and the pouch. If the staples open up there is an opening between the two. That means that food that goes into the pouch can get into the old remnant stomach. That isn't necessarily a problem except it can lead to people not feeling full since the food isn't staying in the small pouch. I think another issue would be if stomach acid from the old stomach swishes around and comes through the hole into the pouch. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if that is the cause of the ulcer and/or fistula.
I'm not sure how they fix that. I would assume that it would have to be done surgically.
Hope you feel better soon!

Elizabeth b-c (written as I wrote it) on this board had this happen. She has had a few other complications, but at last report she said the fistula had healed. Maybe you can find her under Peers (She may be listed under Charlottesville or Staunton. They are moving), or someone here may have her email.
Hope you get results from treatment quickly and can reach Elizabeth.
