protein supps
HI everyone. I'm a bit of a lurker, but spend a good bit of time on here, reading others profiles and such. Love this site! I'm wondering if you can tell me your favorite protein supplements? I'm still a preop at this point, in fact I'm waiting to hear back from my insurance this week for their decision. But I'm (trying to) think optimistically and so I'd kind of like to prepare for the best. Any words of wisdom welcome!
Hey !!!
You stole my post !! I was going to ask the same question...hehehehe
I am pre-op also.
I have tried the Atkins Advantage in Vanilla..170cals, 4g carbs, 1g sugar, pro18g..LOVED it. It was thicker. I drank it super cold. Higher cals that what I want. : (
Advant Edge carb control chocolate fudge 100 cals, 15g PRO, 4G carbs, 0 sugar...was also very good.
Also Carb Solutions High Protein Shake mix is Okay. 21G protein per 2 scoops and only 120 cals...0 sugar, 3 carbs. You can get these at Wal-mart.
I have seem better higher Pro amounts in different brands. My husband has Met- RX Protein Plus which has 46g Pro with 5 carbs, 3 g sugar..But I think that tastes like water. Maybe if it was jazzed up a little...and NOT strawberry. I am going to have to do the math with that one also because it uses 3 scoops...
That is all I know so far. Hope this helps a little...But I look forward to reading your posts to see what everyone else says !!

Hi!
I am 14 months out and have lost 120-122 pounds (that weight fluctuation can drive you crazy~!~).
I recently found a fabulous protein supplement. I bought it at the Vitamin Shoppe and it is Designer Whey Chocolate. It is great -- I usually mix it with no sugar added pudding and use it for breakfast or lunch -- especially if I am having trouble getting my protein levels up.

280/158/???
Matrix Chocolate: 120 cal 22 g protein in 1 scoop (I mix with Lite Soy Milk and end up with an additional 6 g protein and additional 50 cal)
Nectar Fuzzy Navel: 90 cal 20 g protein in 1 scoop (I mix with water)
Unjury Unflavored: 80 cal 20 g protein in 1 scoop (I mix w/Crystal Lite)
These are MY preferences only. I make NO claims as to what is best for anyone. What you use depends on your personal taste.

I'm pre-op too and want to heed the advice I've read on this board about getting the protein in before surgery to aid in healing. I want to try the Nectar Fuzzy Navel in Crystal Light. But for now, just to get it started, I went to Advanced Nutrition and got a 4 lb. container of strawberry Pro Complex which is a whey isolate protein. I mix one serving (which is two heaping scoops @ 55g protein) into a pitcher of Crystal Light and then I divide it between four water bottles to make it easier to take on the go. That product was $50some for 29 servings.
The best Crystal Light I tried so far is the Tangerine-Strawberry with added calcium....and the great thing is...the calcium source is calcium citrate and a serving provides 10 percent of the recommended daily amount. Now, that's 10 percent for the average bear but not for us...we need more. But I figure that every little bit helps and the calcium citrate isn't easy to find. It's also good in the Orange Sunrise but not so great in the Ruby Red Grapefruit so I wouldn't bother with that one. In the first one I mentioned, it tastes JUST like a Bahama Mama. Very refreshing if you can pour it over a tall glass of ice! The second one tastes pretty good too but more like a baby aspirin. In the Ruby Red you can REALLY taste and smell the albumen (the part of the product that comes from egg.) Using the crystal light helps me get my water in.
Today got fouled up and I didn't get the stuff mixed up and also drank quite a bit of plain water. So I split the serving in half and mixed one scoup with about 5 oz. water. (Had two of them about 4 hours apart.) It mixes very well. I just held my breath and chugged it which is fine for now but won't be post-op. It wasn't bad but that would not be something I would mix and enjoy. I couldn't stand strawberry quick either when I was a kid. Gross! I hope this helps!

Hi, Amy!
You might want to check with the protein gurus but I think that I read that protein powders should not be mixed up in advance because they break down. You might want to email vitalady.com - I'm sure she'd have the answer.
Want you to get the most bang for your protein dollar!
Best wishes, Kathy
I tried to pre-mix some unjury unflavored with crystal lite and made the mistake of letting it sit in the fridge for a few hours... when I opened it... the smell of bad milk was overpowering.. I knew the whey had broken down... it tasted even worse than it smelled... if you want it super cold throw in some ice and blend it up... don't want anyone making the same mistake I did...
