SUSTA is the latest sugar substitute to hit store shelves with what developers call a proprietary blend of "insulin fiber, fructose, natural flavors, botanical extracts, vitamins, minerals and probiotics." At 5 calories, SUSTA claims its sweet punch from orange-peel extract.
But its inspiration came the Newton way -- with an apple.
Michael McCarthy, CEO of NXT Nutritionals, tells Slashfood the humble apple's natural sweetness, fiber and nutrients inspired SUSTA's creation.
"I always wondered why we can't make a sweetener that's both low-calorie and has added health benefits," McCarthy said.
Beverage-friendly packets are already hitting the stores, and the company plans a baking-product sweetener within the next three months.
"Each packet is as sweet as two teaspoons of sugar [and] contains one gram of fiber, vitamin C and probiotics," McCarthy said.
Currently, SUSTA is sold in about 2,000 grocery stores. Officials hope 10,000 stores will carry the product by spring 2010.
