Moved to Solids!
I had my 6 week appt today and was moved to solids. I was initially excited, but now I am kind of scared. I picked up some shrimp salad and the store, came home measured out my 2 oz and ate lunch slowly with small bites(I thought)! About 10 minutes later, I was pretty uncomfortable with radiating pain in my back and chest. I am assuming this means it was stuck?? I took several papaya enzymes and eventually made myself throw up. I then felt immediately better. I'm not sure if my pouch doesn't like shrimp or I just took too big of bites. I think I am going to do something mushy tonight to go easy on the pouch. I know all of this takes time - I was scared when I first ate mushies also - so I know the feeling passes!
The good news - In the seven and half weeks since I started my 2 week liquid pre-op diet - I'm down 52lbs. I am 2 lbs lower than I've gotten on my own in the past three years of yo-yo dieting, and 9 lbs until I'm out of the 300's!!! I can't wait to see a 2 in front of my weight!

woo HOO, Michelle!
You are doing fine. Depending where you bought the shrimp salad, you would be surprised to know most salad bars, delis and rests use sugar in theirs. SO, it could have been a combination of things. Believe me it will get better. Hope to see you next week!

WOO HOO! Yay to solids! Shrimp didn't sit well with me until about 3 months ago. It didn't matter how well I chewed or how slowly I ate...I just didn't tolerate it. It's very fibrous and difficult to digest so, I would hold off on it for a little while until your pouch gets used to other solid foods.
Another tip...papaya enzymes are really not helpful with any meat except for beef. It is designed as a beef tenderizer and breaks it down well...but, doesn't tend to help with any other meats. Although they are tasty! LOL
Also...pay close attention over the next few days. If you are noticing that all foods are seeming to get stuck, you may be developing a stricture which is not dangerous and it's not uncommon at this particular stage. It's not a given, of course, but I make sure to tell folks to be on the look out because a lot of people mistake it for having a very finicky pouch and don't realize it's a stricture until you can't get even liquids down. So...keep that in the back of your mind.
You are SO close to that first magic goal of the 2somethings! I was SO excited to see 299 on the scale and felt so FREE from that stupid 3! Congratulations!

Thanks for the good advice Lisa! I've noticed that stuck feeling a little more lately, but I've attributed it to becoming more comfortable eating and not being as diligent with the small bites and chewing. I will definately keep an eye on it!
The best thing about this journey is KNOWING that the 2's will come and the 3's are gone FOREVER!

Hmmmm, I'm not really sure. Honestly, I don't know what "stuck" feels like. I've had a couple of things I've suspected of being "stuck" but mainly I haven't had this problem like some of the others. I mainly have trouble with eating too fast and suffering from "sitting a brick" as I like to call it. LOL. Like I swalled a big 'old brick whole! ACK!
The moving to solids part is REALLY trial and error. Just focus on chew vchew chew (I KNOW....SIGH...LOL) and eat slow. You new pouchie will tell you what feels good and bad. My surgeon offices suggestion during our 6 week progression into solid foods was to try something and if it wasn't a good fit, to leave it alone for a week and then try try again.
To giv eyou a good example of something my pouchie just DIDN"T like int he beginning - EGGS. I always loved eggs and tried and tried and tried. But everyone time I ate them, any stle of them I kept feeling nauseaus and sick. SO i just gave up for a while. And then maybe six months later I gave them a try again and POOF, the problem was gone. Now, I have to eat them VERY slowly or else I do feel a little ill. So you just never know. It's all trial and error! GOOD LUCK!

I think I got a little ****y because I haven't had a problem with any foods. Aside from a little tilapia the other day that sat "like a brink" , everything has been pretty smooth. I do have to remember to chew, chew, chew and eat slow - which is sometimes hard with everything going on around me! I will definately be giving shrimp a break for a while. Thanks!
