Hi Ross,

I sure remember you. Nice to see you here again.
Navy wife here--almost 2 years out.

Tricare Prime can only go through a Military hospital. She must get a referral from her PCM to bariatrics.
To be seen by an outside provider, she needs to be Tricare Standard.
A call to Healthnet benefits will tell her if she can enroll in Standard while the rest of the family remains in Prime.

Best of luck to her

Hi there,

As Jen said, it depends on whether she is TRICARE Prime or Standard.  I went TRICARE Standard, and what I had to do was make sure the surgeon I went with accepted it (he did), make an appointment with him, then this office submitted the paperwork.  I am not sure how it works right now, but at the time (about 18 months ago) as long as I met their requirements, I was good to go (had to speak by phone with someone from TRICARE when she called to confirm).  They would not give a pre-authorization at the time, so there was always a chance they could change their minds, but luckily they did not!  :)

I hope that helps.

Ross,  I'm a military dependent and Tricare/healthnet approved my surgery at Potomac Hospital with Dr. Halmi here in Woodbridge.  You can email me or PM me if you'd like.  [email protected]

Forgot to mention - I am Tricare prime - No problems at all.  Because the military hospitals that are able to perform the surgery up here are full of active duty wounded soldiers.  I got referred out to Dr. Halmi and did not have to become Tricare Standard.   So no worries - it can be done.
