Average Weight Loss - Expectations

Hi guys!  I know everyone is different and that you cannot compare yourself with others.  With that said, when does the weight really start coming off?

I hear people say that in 6 weeks they have lost 50 pounds.  I am so NOT in that ball park.    I have lost almost 19lbs in 4 weeks. I started out at 245ish and I am really not complaining.  I am very happy about not having four 5lb bags of sugar on my behind.

But what can I expect?  I guess I really want to have some realistic expectations.  I thought it was about a pound a day but that isn't happening for me.  What will the loss be on average in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th month?

Everyone is different.  I know what was my average and it is about the same for much of the patients at our WLS office.  I think a lot of it has to do with your post op diet.  We were on two weeks of liquids.  Then we gradually progressed to other foods.  I lost quite a bit (averaged 10 lbs per week for the first 5 weeks) then actually gained because I was admitted into the hospital for my first of two strictures.  The amount you lose depends greatly on YOU.  How you eat, what you eat, the amount of exercise you do, the amount of protein you consume and water (plain 'ol water!) and you taking your vitaimins.  Of course if you have other health problems this could also cause various results.  On average, most WLS patients lose 80% of their excess body fat...but you can be higher.  I personally lost 100% of mine and I WILL get back there after Claire is born!

I was progressing quite nicely until I got sick with Pancreatitis.  Then my calorie level really dropped off.  Before I was eating about 500 to 700 calories and then it dropped to maybe on a good day, 300 calories.  You would think that I would loose more, not less.  It is like my body does not want to let go of the fat.  It is holding on to it.....grrr

Try and remember that you have to eat to fuel your body.  If you do not get in enough calories then your body will not allow you tio burn them because it feels as though it is starving.  Hard to believe...but you have to eat now to lose weight and survive!  500-700 is a good area for you to be in now from what I remember.  You will get back there!

Hey Sharon. I have gained 4 lbs in 3 days and I have only had 400 calories a day because I was sick. I do not understand this at all.

I am much larger than you and I have lost 130 lbs but it has been 8 months though. Just keep doing the right things and the weight will be off before you know it.

I agree with Tam - we are all different - so our results will be different.  But if you are curious I have my weight tracker on my profile page.  That will show you the rate at which I lost weight.  I was fairly steady during the entire first year and then starting in January I think it REALLY taped off at one point being my first true stall.  I imagine that the scale will creep down a bit more over the next couple of months and then my body will be telling me it's done.  :)

Just like everyone else said, everyone is different...

From what I hear, if you have more to lose, you're going to lose it faster. Maybe it's like a race where everyone ends up a the same (general) finish line at the same time, so those who have to go farther have to go faster?

I could be making that up. :)

What hasn't been mentioned is that OH has a weight estimator. You enter in your starting BMI and (I think) your procedure, and it tells you what you might expect. It was not too far off for me (though I did do better than it predicted :) ).

Best of luck, the weight WILL come off.

The tough part of WLS is not the first year, it's those that follow.

I never used this tool or really even knew about it.  You and I started preop at very similar numbers.  Pre pregnancy I was down to 145-150 average (I bounced up and down 5 pounds on average) .  Some days I thought I looked too thin but then others I just wanted my plastics so I could feel better about myself.  Oh well...I will get back to my prepreggers weight and I will have plastics, too!

I just found the VA Board.  I"m slow.  Hello Neighbor.  I read your post and I started at 253 then did my 2 week diet and when under the knife at 243.  I lost 20 pounds in 2 weeks and was thrilled thinking I was going to lose like that for the rest of the 90 pounds I had to lose.  NOT!  I then lost 10 pounds month 3 and now I'm only losing 6 pounds a month.  I have lost a total of 53 pounds.  I have been stalled since 1/6/09.  Stuck at 200.  It's a kick in the pants that I"m stuck at 200.  Throw me a bone and let me weigh 199 please.  My other stall at 6 weeks lasted 6 weeks.  My 6 month check up is 3/4.  I found a chart that said 50% weight lose at 6 months.  So according to that charge I'm on target.

Hope this helps your comparson.  From one Virginian to another.  LOL

Welcome to the VA board!  I am also a Dr. H patient.  I have lost a total of 260 lbs in all, but have gained back 42 of those since I am pregnant now.  I plan on losing all of my pregnancy weight and maybe 10 more pounds then pursuing plastics.  Tell us more about yourself!
