I need your true experiences....
I am considering the RNY or the DS
Have already had the lap band and lost 60 in 1st 2 years...

I have 100 more pounds to lose and dont know which surgery to ask the doc about.
Please tell me your TRUE experiences of keeping the weight off with the RNY ... how many pounds did you lose and how long have you kept off.

Diet and exercise is not my thing -- which is why am looking at the DS but I understand the poops and body odor is real bad with the DS.  So any DS folks out there ... tell me the truth.

Thank You.

I already responded to you on another thread, but I didn't realize you were from VA! What part of the state are you in? If you are near northern VA, I invite you to join us at The Staple Club support group meeting in Chantilly tonight! There are both RNYers (mostly) and DSers that attend. I am pre-op, and I have been attending for months now. Let me know if you are nearby and if you can make it--PM me for details.

I chose the RNY.  Actually, I chose a surgeon and discussed with him what would be best.  I lost 260 pounds in about 15 months and kept it all off until I got pregnant last summer.  I fluctuated within 5 pounds of my goal weight.  I had surgery in 2005 and got pregnant in 2008 so I think I did pretty good!  I was not one for diet and exercise either, although since losing so much weight I did begin to like doing it.  I was up to running six miles a day and doing other exercises, too.  For an RNY you WILL have to modify what you eat.  There are certain foods which are no-no's and if you pu**** you will know why.  I advise to talk to different surgeons and see what the pros and cons are of each different surgery.  I have had excellent results, long term, with the RNY and I highly recommend it.

I had Lap RNY September 19, 2007. so it has been 16 months.  I have lost 161 lbs., exceeded my surgeon's goal, and am only 7 pounds from my personal goal.

I'll be honest, I picked the RNY because I needed the restrictions it offers, understanding that there are issues with malabsorption.  For me, keeping it off involves monitoring what I am eating on a daily basis, keeping up with my fluid intake, making sure I take all of my supplements and get labs done on a regular basis, and most of all -- exercise on a regular basis.  That said, it seems to me that those are all things that will need to be done for any surgery to be successful.  The surgery is a tool, how successful it is depends on how well we work it.

I think what you are doing is exactly the right thing -- researching the options that are out there.  There are many good, reputable bariatric surgeons in this area who perform many different surgeries.  I would recommend attending their introductory meetings and/or support groups and see what works for you.

Good luck to you!  :)
