Brengman's Paitens/smoking

OK guys I have quit smoking but...I am in a poolhall full of smoke 5 nights a week for no less than 6 hours at a time.  I am concerened that this will show in blood work and he might not believe that I had really quit.  This was not to hard for me because I know that it is necessary for the surgery. That is why I am so concerned!  I don't want him to say no or delay sugery (3/9)  because of something I have no controll over.  I can't just not go to pool because I am on several teams, one of  which might win another free trip to LasVegas!!  I want to know how about the timeframe of bloodwork to surgery date.  I am hoping that if I stay out of the poolhall for a few days before the bloodwork I might have levels lowered of the smoke by products.  Help me guys I am more worried about this than I was the insurance approval.

I'm not sure what will or won't show up in your blood stream, but I'm thinking that it will be significantly reduced if you've quit and are just getting it via second-hand now. Also, be honest about it with your surgeon...tell him the situation. Communication is key!

I placed a call to his nurse last week so I could ask about it and get the info into the file maybe but I didn't get a call back.  I have a nutrition class on Mon. and I will also pose the question then.

hmmm, I have no idea about the second hand smoke showing up on the test they run on you.  It's a great question for your surgical team, but be aware that the nutritionist probably won't have an answer for your as it will not be their area or expertise.  Be persistant for a callback from your office.  :)

Hey there...nicotine doesn't show up in any kind of routine bloodwork that your doc would be doing.  The reasons behind quitting have more to do with healing post op, etc.  You are at higher risk of infection, ulcers, etc. if you are a smoker prior to or after surgery.  Besides the obvious benefit of not getting emphysema...

Good luck

Be up front and tell the team what you are facing.  Your health is at stake here.  It hurts healing time and puts you at greater risk.
