What to tell your boss when you have surgery scheduled...

Hi there!  I just found out my surgery date is Jan 29th ( I am so excited).

Now, I have to inform my boss that I need some time off.  I work from home so I don't go into an office and I really do not want to share with her that I am having WLS.  It is pretty personal to me.

Does anyone have any advice on what to tell your boss?

Just tell her you are having a medical issue and make sure you apply for FMLA and/or STD if it is available.  Congratulations on your date...I can't wait to welcome you to the losers bench, oficially!

Thanks for the post.  My company offers up to 42 days of sick pay.  Would I still need FMLA?

In a nutshell...YES!  God forbid something happens and you are out more than those 42 days...you need job security!  You may also qualify for STD.  I did and it helped so I could save my sick/vacation time.  It never hurts to be over protected!

As Kat stated...you are not required to tell them anything.  You have a right to privacy.  I was up front and told everyone...I was just so estatic to be having it done!

I was up front and VERY clear with my work that I was having WLS (yours and my dates are the same - I'm 6 years post-op the 29th). I applied for short term disability and was unpaid for 7 days until it kicked in then I was covered. Because 7 days are unpaid until it kicked in and our company policy allows us to use 2 weeks of vacation at one time I used 7 days for the unpaid and was covered under STD for the rest. I was out for 4 weeks to the day of surgery. At that time I was an "in office" employee. Personally you don't have to tell them ANYTHING except you are going to require time off for a medical procedure. You can work out the details since you work at home as to your return to work. All best for a successful surgery!

While I finally did decide to confide in my boss, I haven't in everyone who's hands and eyes will come in contact with my FMLA papers. My Dr. wrote abdominal surgery and recovery, and that was enough. They don't have to have the specific procedure according to law. Let them use their imagination. The ones I haven't shared with that hear I'm going out on medical leave ( note, not surgery) that have the nerve to ask point blank I tell I'm having a little "nip and tuck". When they ask what, I tell them to wait and see if they can tell when I get back!

Good luck, I'm the 21st!.

Unfortunately, I don't have any experience in that "department," but wanted to congratulate you and wish you the best!  :)

Thanks for all the support.  I talked to my my boss tonight.  She did not press me and was very supportive.  One more boxed checked.  Thanks again!
