Calcium Citrate Question

You would think that after 10 months, I would have this straight, but the truth is I've not been taking the right calcium. Some idiot pharmacist assistant at the store swore that Caltrate Chewables was calcium citrate and since I did not have my glasses with me I took her word for it and have been taking them for months only to find out now, that they are not. So my question is, how much calcium citrate am I actually supposed to be taking a day? After RNY surgury that is. Thanks, Pam

I take about 1600mg which is the bariatric advantage chewable calcium quivalent of 4 a day. 400mg at one time as your body really only digests 400 at a time.

My NP & I have been discussing this back & forth. Its interesting what they gave as samples (Caltrate 600 + D - chewables ) in the office until I met her. Then I really learned that its a SAMPLE & although not the best for us. The one she suggests is Citrical or Oscal 1200 MG - 2 tablets. I'm reviewing Jackie's reply. I'm all for chewables.

My NUT want us to take 500 mgs twice a day.    500 mg at one time. Your system can only intake 500 at one time.      Do not take it with other vitamins as it effects its absorbtion.   Make sure it has vitamin D and Magnesium in it as well.

My OBGYN wants me on 1000 mgs but never told me to take them separately.   Darn Dr.'s have not idea about nutrition.

I do not do well with calcuim, I burp it up.   Someone just recommened Celebrate Bariatric calcuim "hot chocolate" flavor.   It it a crunchy tablet, better taste than most of the chewables.   I ordered their multi chewables as well. Have not tried them yet.

I also take the Calcium from Bariatric Advantage and love them. I take two pills a day, one in the morning and one in the evening. I do not have the bottle here so I am unsure of the dosage. My levels are great at every check. I also have some samples of thses celebrate ones but have not tried them.

I take 3 of the Bariatric Advantage = 1200 mg. Plus, I get calcuim in from my multi vit and dairy.

Prior to taking the BA calcium, I tool the Citracal Petites - 6 daily (UGH!)
