I was reading my WLS "bible" tonight and see where it says the sucessful WLS patient does not drink "juices" I have been drink 100% Orange Juice like crazy lately. I thought it would be good.

Am I doing wrong? Should I stop drinking OJ?

Check with your NUT.   High acid and high sugar content.     You are early out use care with high acids.    Surprised you are not having acid issues.

My NUT in the beginning suggested cranberry light.   I had to water it down as it was too strong for me.

Most juices are high in frutose.  Sugars make us hungry.  We should be staying clear of sugars.

Drink protien drinks, low fat milk (i do lactaid) & water.   If you are looking for fruit flavor drinks try the zero cal/carb crystal light flavors.   They are sugar free and taste pretty good.    Flavored Snytax Nectar drinks have some natural fruit flavors....

If you must have orange flavor only approved orange is canned mandarin oranges light.

You tummy is still healing, be kind to it.   Hang in there.  Caroline

My surgeon is really funny about juice.  He doesn't really like you to do it.  I think technically our book tells us that 4oz of Diet/Light Cranberry is okay.  What he told me is that juice is too high in calories and sugar to benefit you.  I do admit I have OJ as a special treat maybe once every month or two.  I buy a "normal" person size drink (20oz?) and split it with Nate.  :)  That way it's not hanging around the house calling to me.  :)

Hey Ken! Jeannine told me early out, like at my 4 week check up that 100% all natural fruit juices were ok, because even though it is sugar it is natural sugar. She also said the same about milks, that the sugars are natural, so if I could tolerate it, then of course to drink it, in moderation. I don't personally due juices, haven't since my surgery, even though Jeannine said it was ok. I do however, drink a glass or 2 of milk daily. Not every one will agree, nor does each surgeon say the same as our surgeon's office. If you still don't feel comfortable, give Jeannine a call.

I drink it but only on occasion. Only when we go through Burger King drive-thru in morning to get hubby breakfast( every 3 weeks- he works swing shift) and I cant eat or drink anything on their menu except OJ.  Its a small carton and it takes me about an hour to drink it as I dont wanna consume that much sugar too quickly.

I thought I was told 100% was ok, I will finish up the carton and check when I go back this month for my check up. I hope she doesn't take that away. I love some OJ, especially the "Simply Orange"

It is very high in sugar as the others have said.  I use it to make some protein shakes and as a treat.  I also drink it when I am sick...it helps a lot!  Early out I would water it down.  Please ask and let me know what she says...I am curious to find out!

I will diffently ask. I am almost sure Jeanne told me the same thing, natural sugars were ok. And if you can eat oranges, why not 100% orange juice.

I used to drink a glass of OJ every morning and i was normally the only one in the house that never got sick. My wife always contributed it the OJ.

And OJ was about the only drink that tasted good, seems like everrything else did not taste the same.

Ok, I'm kinda curious as to why you would continue to do something that MIGHT not be good for you & opt to WAIT till your appointment, when a phone call will get you the answer you need right away?

Also, was one of your co-morbidities diabetetes?  If so, have you been released from treating it yet?  If not, you really should not be doing OJ....the sugar content, even though it is "natural" sugar, is still very high & can wreak havoc on your sugar levels.

Just a couple of things to consider.

Hugs!
Ann
