Happy, but frustrated!

Finally, home from the holidays & visits with family!!! Way too much driving for a long weekend, but I survived it! I was so excited on Christmas Eve...I got the Christmas gift I wanted the most! I weighed 497 back in Feb '08 & 473 day of surgery 9/25/08...well my first goal was to get below 400 by Christmas. I weighed myself Christmas Eve & weighed 396, so I met my goal!!! I am so psyched, that I can't wait to get back into working out!!!

My family was great & very supportive, only their talk was just that! My mom had the lap band surgery in 2001...was a success, then she had them let the water out because she had H. Pylori...IDK...then gained again...went to Weigh****chers & looked really good in Mar '07...then gained it all back plus some! She looked so bad when I saw her, but she preached one thing & did another! Her blood sugar was even 417 Christmas night about 11:30pm!!!

Then, my brother & his wife both had gastric bypass in 2002 & her in 2001. He got down from 680 to 255 for his wedding in 2004 & she was stunning, weighing about 140...now they both are heavy again. He even told me he weighs 356!!! this is SSSSSOOOOOOOOOOO DISCOURAGING!!! I was so nauseated jus****ching everyone eat, that I could barely get anything down! My brother took the skin off the ham, then broiled it in the oven until it was crispy...everyone was chowing down on crunchy pig fat!!! I felt like I was going to blow like a volcano

So, how does this happen? You go through everything that comes with these surgeries, then you just don't care enough about yourself to keep up with the program. Granted, everyone falls off the wagon...but if you really want to maintain how well you look...then you have to keep working out & most importantly...watch what you put in your mouth! I am just glad to be home now, where I can cook & prepare for ME!!!

Honestly, it is hard to say what happens -- I am sure it differs from person to person.  I am inclined to think that it is a matter of how seriously the WLS patient takes the surgery and the use of the "tool" itself (pouch)...not just immediately post op, but for the long term.  It is important to keep in mind that if our "tool" is treated properly, used correctly and managed well, we will be successful at keeping the weight off long term.   Exercising, keeping up our protein intake, making sure we get all of our supplements in, watch our labs, take in the appropriate amount of fluids, eating small meals throughout the day, tracking our food intake...these are just some of the ways we can continue to be successful long term.  We can't go back to old habits...that is what got us there in the first place.

Plan for your success, don't fear failure because that is what you have seen.  Use that as a springboard for being the successful WLS patient you want to be...successful and HEALTHY!  :)

Cindy's right. Just because others make choices they shouldn't doesn't mean you have to or will follow suit. Its hard especially when its family. I know that for sure. I'm STOKED you met your Cmas goal! That is fantastic!!

How does this happen? For each person their journey is different. Its AWESOME to be able to learn from others experiences. I KNOW its hard to watch family make some really bad decisions but I have finally learned that we can only control ourselves and cannot fix others or help them unless they want to help themselves. Simply put. Keep fighting the good fight for YOU. See all these things as signs of what you DONT want to do and where you DONT want to get back to.

All best!

I agree witht the advice given and Id say stay clear of the family functions if this is how they choose to eat. In order foryou to suceed you must do as the Dr's instruct you. NO MATTER what the family or friends say or do! In order to keep it off u follow the rules of the tool. It never goes away unless you choose to let it ! Congrats on your goals and contiued sucsess in the future! Look forward to reading your updates....

Congrats on reaching for goal!!      You now see first hand what can happen if you dont stick to using the tool the right way. Get back in the gym and show them all what success looks like.

Congrats on reaching your goal of getting below 400!  WOOHOO!

As for your family members weight re-gain and it being discouraging.  Everyone's journey is different.  I think Cindy's advice was awesome, just keep using your tool - long term.

I can't wait to hear more along your journey!  :)
