I really miss my Diet Mt. Dews. I see other people (WLS Patients) drinking diet carbinated drinks but have not asked them. How many of you drink carbinated drinks, how often?

I have had a couple diet ginger ales due to my own personal stomach issues, but this was on insistence from Jeanine (Dr Hutchers nurse) It made my stomach hurt even worse. I know I miss diet coke, but we don't want to take any chances. I say follow your drs orders, and since we have the same dr he says no sodas allowed. I now don't even think about it. It took over 3 months though.

Hey Ken,

First, please consult your WLS surgeon to discuss this. Next, personally I do NOT drink sodas as a rule. Have I in the past? Yes. However, they make me VERY uncomfortable and they are honestly not worth the trouble for me. Lastly, they expand the pouch making me want something more to drink and I get bloated and again its just not worth it. All best!

Hiya Ken...I occassionally have diet ginger ale...also on Dr. H's advice due to nausea and I will on occassion have a small sip or two of hubbys soda but as a rule I do not drink them.  Period.  They expand the pouch, can and will stretch it and give a very uncomfortable feeling.  My cousin is over 20 years post op and he started drinking diet code red mountain dews and has gained back about 60 pounds.  Is it worth it?  Not to me!

I was told from the start that sodas were a "no go."  Never given any other option.  I have stuck with it, and don't plan to change because I have heard that it is not only a bad habit to get back into, but it can cause problems with a build up of gas in your pouch.  I am not a big fan of just plain water, so I make my own decaf iced tea that I take with me everywhere.  Others love to use Crystal Light.  You may want to try something like that.  Good luck!  :)

I guess it is more of a "you can't have it" thing, rather than really wanting it. But when I recently witnessed two other WLS patients drinking Diet Coke it got me to thinking.

Oh, I know...the ole "forbidden fruit" thing.  Some people try things out -- I am more of the mindset that it's not worth it to push the envelope -- that is what got me in trouble in the first place!  ;)

My surgeon's office says no carbonated beverages.  In addition to that, almost all of the studies I've read online said that going back to drinking soda can start you down that "slippery slope" to weight gain.  For me diet soda wasn't my favorite anyway, so I don't much have the desire.  Now if I could have a regular coke, that would be a different story.  LOL.  But alas, my soda days are done.  Good luck with whatever you decide for yourself.
