Tam - your MIL sounds like mine!

We are making our first trip up to Pittsburgh to see her since our daughter was born - over 3 years ago!

She won't come down here and we didn't want to drive 6-7 hours with a baby in the car...

She has changed a lot since Abby was born, but she WANTS my husband to be a mama's boy - and he's not!  Thankfully!

I think it is so hard for mothers to raise boys.  There's this new TV show that is starting soon where moms choose their son's girlfriends...bad idea!!!  I see so many men day in and day out who are grown and either live with their moms or constantly take their moms' sides in arguments against their wives...yuk!

I hope your trip goes well...I will say some prayers.  My MIL knows this is her LAST chance to have any sort of relationship...so we will see how she handles it.  She knows our standpoint...and thankfully Steve and I completely agree...so the ball is in her court!

I can SOOOOO relate! Like Tam, I have a MIL that we have no contact with whatsoever, not even at weddings (which she refuses to attend if I am going to be there) or funerals. I'll spare you the story because I am sure it is very similar to what you are experiencing, but suffice it to say she is probably one of the most selfish, dysfunctional, immature and evil people I have ever encountered. It is indeed truly amazing to me how my wonderful hubby was born of her; just goes to show you how some people are able to grow and learn and be more than what their genetics and upbringing might dictate. Because she is so toxic, we made the decision to cut off contact and our lives have been so much better for it. Yes, it is sad, but we refuse to allow our children (and future children) to be affected by that toxicity.

ETA: One of the most hyopcritical things about these women is that many of them profess to be Christians, yet conveniently forget what the Bible says about putting one's spouse first and cleaving from their own mother and father. They expect their own spouses to put them first, but when it comes to other people doing the same, they throw a fit and claim that their child is "selfish" by choosing their own spouse over their parent.

You are so right on!  Like I said...my MIL cheated on her husband (my FIL) and left him for the other man...a preacher!  They both profess to be Christians but I am not buying it!

About you ETA - we suffer from the "you should treat your mother/father better than you do your spouse" game too.  Do you know of any particular bible verses that say otherwise.  I DO love a good retort the next this the being Christian thing comes up!  ;)

One of the best I can think of is right in the beginning, so it must be important, right? In Genesis verse 2:22, God says that a man must stick to his wife and they should become one flesh. Note that Adam and Eve had no earthly parents!!! The verse does not say a man must stick to his parents and THEY should become one fle****hat's gross!

Here's some other Biblical sense for those who seem to forget what God says about marriages and these very verses they probably spoke themselves or had spoken on their wedding day:

Mark 10:9: "Have you not read," he said, "that he who made them in the beginning made them male and female, and said, For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh? So that they are no more two, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder."

1 Corinthians 13: the famous "Love is patient" verse where it says "love does not insist on its own way" . This is very applicable to the love of parents and their children.

2 Corinthians 2:14: Behold, this is the third time I am ready to come to you, and I will not be a burden to you; for I seek not your possessions, but you. For the children ought not to save up for the parents, but the parents for the children.

Proverbs 9:14: House and wealth are a heritage from fathers, but a wife with good sense is from the Lord.

I like Proverbs 9:14 myself :) Again, notice it does NOT say "a mother with good sense is a gift from the Lord."

Oh Dawn...these are FABULOUS versus to resource!  I may have to use one or two myself.  Thanks for the reminders.  I have my "usual" sayings to MIL and over the past 10 1/2 years I have lapsed on the biblical sayings.  I may try and "kill her with kindness" so to speak and give her some good facts.  With a preacher as a husband...how can she object???

That's CLASSIC! A preacher for her husband! I think the "notice what these verses do NOT say" would have the intended effect!!!! and would give you and hubby lots of laffs to boot!
