Hello everyone I am new to this board.  I researched WLS 5 years ago and decided against it than but now is a better time in my life for it.  I am still researching and looking at doctors.  I am going to try to attend several of the seminars at Fair Oaks hospital and learn all I can.  I plan on contacting a doctor after Jan when my insurance is going to change.  For right now I am meeting with my PCP to talk to him about WLS he suggested it to me a few years back.  It seams that every insurance company requires the 3-6 month physicians diet monitoring so I figured I might as well get a head start on that now.

I live in the woodbridge/dale city/dumfries area and see some people in the group from there so that is encouraging.  It is nice to know I am not living in a bubble here.  This group has helped me so much already.

Karen - welcome to the board, you will find a lot of knowledgeable people here!  I had my surgery with Drs. Halmi & Tran, they operate out of fair oaks and potomac (in woodbridge).  Check with your PCP or your insurance and see what kind of supervised diet they want, my insurance let me just do WW, but not everyone's will.  I wish you the best of luck, again WELCOME!  lys

Hi Karen and I also welcome you to the board. I'm told that DR Moazz (misp) operates out of woodbridge area and I was told he was good. I have a friend who used him and she swears by him. I don't recommend using my dr as he is expensive. Most ins co do require some evidence of weight loss before surgery. I have blue cross/blue shield and they didn't. Good luck on your search.. Jim

Hello I am in Woodbridge.   Dr Moazzez is excellant.   Dr Halmi has a great reputation too.

But I do suggest you have your surgery at Fair Oaks Hospital.  You want the best.
Potomac Hospital has poor staff of anestists.  Anestisist did a poor intebation (could not get the tube in and then out.  ......Multiple attempts to put in a fluid line..for each attempt she gave a pain shot before attemting the line.... Never completed &  Chief Anestist had to be called in.  After surgery had servere throat paid.  Chief Anestisist would not talk to my Dr or me.

Fair Oaks bariatric surgery with Dr Moazzez went off without a hitch.. Nursing staff & Nutritionists are the best.  I will never go the Potomac again.    Not the 1st time I have received poor service before and never again.

Good LucK Karen.

Hello, Karen:

First of all, welcome to the Va. Board.  It's a great group of people here, ready to provide support throughout the journey you're about to embark on!

I am "just down the street" from you in North Stafford.  My surgeon is Dr. Halmi, who is based out of the Century Building near Potomac Hospital.  He and his partner, Dr. Tran, perform surgeries at both Potomac Hospital and Fair Oaks Hospital, and their practice is a Center of Excellence.

If you are interested, Drs. Halmi and Tran have a support group meeting at the Potomac Hospital Education Center the first Thursday of the month at 6:30PM.  Since it is closer to you than Fair Oaks, you may want to consider attending.  They have a great turn out of not only those interested in the surgery, but a lot of post ops, both lap band and RNY.

Congratulations on making the decision to have WLS!  :)

Karen,

Hello and Welcome to the VA board!  I am not in your area but you have received a great deal of information about the surgeons in your area.  Good luck in the process and let us know if we can do anything.  Each insurance company and group for that matter is different.  I did not have to do anything.  I just showed where I had spoken to my pcp for years about my weight.  I did not have to do any dr supervised weight loss visits or WW or anything.  I am one of the lucky ones.  Good luck!

I'm in Woodbridge, too (Lake Ridge area). I encourage you to research all the different WLS procedures. Pick your surgery based on your needs and how you want to live the rest of your life, THEN find a surgeon who specializes in your desired procedure. For me, the DS is my surgery of choice, so I am traveling up to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore for my surgery. Also, if you're looking in the Fairfax area, too, I suggest attending Dr. Elariny's free seminar (I REALLY liked him, just couldn't get myself to cough up the $$ for him to do my DS since he is out-of-network for insurance for the DS).
