I think many of us went through the same thought process. If you are very strong willed, and disciplined and not in any hurry to lose the weight, lapband may well be for you. But I am weak and the surgery does not change the thought process in your head. So I had RNY so I could lose the weight quickly and dumping would keep me scared enough to not over-indulge..... it works for me...
It has to be your decisions but I have never regretted mine.....

Wow, Thanks everyone for the input, it has help me a lot. I have made my appt with my doc for Jan 14, it's the first opening he has, so I will continue to read as much as I can and ask questions as the come up. It feels good to be apart of a wonderful support like you all. I have felt so alone in this for so long. Everyone close to me is trying to talk me out of having this done, but this is the first real thing I have done for me and my health and I will NOT let anyone change my mind. I want this, but more importantly I need this.
I started with Lap band and then changed to the Sleeve. Insurance at the beginning was not paying for the Sleeve. Changed over. No regrets
Each of us had to do the research. Go to some of the monthly meetings at Fair Oaks. I will tell you that Dr Moazzez, Fair Oaks staff and Anestists were all fantastic. Listen to posts on here and learn. I respect the advise given on the Virginia forum. Grain of salt on the national forum.

I went to my first appt not knowing which procedure I was going with. I stated the facts of what i wanted to get out of surgery and the surgeon confirmed what I already researched. I wanted to lose the weight in the shortest amount of time so I could get on with having children. Althought the five years results comparing RNY to lapband are similar, I didn't have five years to wait. I felt confidant in my surgeon, his years of experience and that I was getting a surgery that has been perfected in the last 25 years. The results are tried and true. Lapband is still relatively new and we do not have the long term data yet. Good luck with your decision!

Hiya!
I originally wanted to have the LapBand too. The things that I found when I was doing my research is that I just didn't see how I would have the same success with the Band as the RNY. I knew that I had a lot of weight to lose....I was 348 the day of surgery and I had already spent countless hours and dollars on losing weight slowly and painfully.
I chose RNY and I have had some rare and not so fun complications. But, I will tell you now, that even if I knew before hand what I was going to have to go through, I would STILL do it. I have lost 160 pounds. I feel better now (even when I'm sick) than I EVER did at 350 pounds.
I would still go to Dr. Moazzez...he is the best. I trust him completely and I know that another surgeon wouldn't be as attentive and caring as he has been through this whole thing.
I highly suggest you attend the support group meetings at IFOH...the next one is Monday from 630-8pm. I'm going to be there and would be happy to answer any questions you have.

I did my seminar tonight at Fair Oaks with Dr.Moazzez, when I went there tonight I was sure that I wanted Lap Band done, now I have no clue. I really don't have anyone to talk to about this so I turned here for help and support. I'm so ready to get out of this fat suite that I am wearing and find the real me under all this fat. I have started about 3 months ago with taken vitiams and walking more, but man my knees are killing me... I think I should buy stock in Tylenol. So any info anyone can send my way it would help. I know I can always ask my doc but sometimes you get better advice from those who have been through it.I wanted to loose the most weight possible.
I agree with all the above.
Also, a rule of thumb given at my support group meeting....If you eat a lot of sugar, go with RNY. If you are a big meal eater, then go with lapband. As for me, I was both!!! I had RNY and I'm very happy with my decision.

Ok, this is probably gonna come as a shock for many here, but I am rethinking my journey. I had lapband surgery with Dr. Mo July of last year. The most I have lost thus far is between 30 & 40 lbs! Fifteen months later & I'm STILL not in onederland! Now, to be fair, exercise is an important ingredient to successful loss with the band, & I don't think I considered that when I made my decision. I have serious health issues that weight loss will not/cannot reverse, but losing the weight would certainly HELP with the issue. I have a very weak heart & my physical abilities are very limited. I have many, many questions to ask Dr. Mo when I see him next, but I believe I am going to seriously reconsider. I have NEVER felt any restriction. I can eat just as much now as I did before. My biggest problem is food getting stuck because sometimes, if I'm talking. for instance, I get excited & forget to chew or take small enough bites. I don't know if my band needs some "tweaking" or what. All I DO know is that it ain't workin' for me anymore & I've been discouraged for waaaay too long. On the other hand, there have been some very successful people out there that had the band. I think I've been pretty patient...15 months later...so I think it's time to raise the bar.
I wish you luck in making your decision. You have certainly come to the right place too. These people are amazing! Ok...so who needs smelling salts? LOL
