Any correlation between.....

WLS and constantly being sick..... Well not constantly but... close enough. I am 6 months out and this is the 3rd time I have had bronchitis and a sinus infection. And they don't just come, get treated and go away. They linger, and linger and LINGER!! It is always treated with an antibiotic, requires more than 1 trip to the dr and usually a 2nd or 3rd treatment of a different antibiotic.

Just wanted to know if anyone thinks there is a correlation between the 2. Maybe due to the malabsorption of vitamins and minerals, or a weakening of our immune system. Maybe I am off base but I am just so curious as to see what others think or have experienced. Thanks for reading and for inputs.

There could be some, but it really depends on you and your body.  I get sinus infections all the time and usually have to take several rounds of antiobotics before it is gone...but I had this preop.  As for bronchitis, well, it is the time of year for it...especially if you have asthma.  Yes, RNY patients do malabsorb but that is why it is extra important not to skip doses of vitamins and especially to skip meals.  Your body fuels itself from the food you eat.  If you do not eat at regular intervals then your body goes into starvation mode and begins to eat itself for the fuel and that is why you (not you personally, but you as a general overview) tend to get sick more often and it is harder to kick.  Your body gets "run down" when you (again, general overview) do not take care of it fully.  A lot of us long term post ops have gone thru the same thing.  Also...make sure you have discussed with Jeanine about the types of antiobotics you are on.  I had to go back to a liquid so I could absorb more of it and I also split the doses to give it a better chance, too.  It worked great!  I do hope you are feeling better soon!

I actually asked someone this exact question not too long ago. I agree with Tammy...we need to take even better care of ourselves and switching to liquid antibiotics/spreading the dose does help. I tend to get more colds now it seems...but that could be a combo of my "new" body and the fact that I'm out and about more (exposed to it more). I'll take a a cold for a few days over the pounds I've lost any 'ole day! Of course, for you, yours are a bit more serious, so I'd certainly make sure that you keep in touch with your Dr. and really do something to kick it once and for all.

I noticed I got a lot more colds last year, but they thankfully didn't progress to anything more serious like sinus infection or bronchitis. However, I did start taking Vitamin C pills this past April as an attempt to ward off the colds since I intake almost no citrus fruits.  This winter will be the test of effectiveness.

I have started taking the Vit C pills, too!  I found an awesome tasting one at Costco.  It is sugar free and chewable and best of all...cheap!  I think it has helped me tremendously already.  I do eat some citrus fruits and drink some juices (OJ occassionally) but this is a constant thing.

How strange that you mention this. I am just coming down with something, I think, and I've noticed the opposite... that since WLS, I have gotten sick MUCH less. And here I thought maybe it was because of the vitamins that I'm taking all the time. I guess I seem to be the exception rather than the rule.

I hope that you feel better though!

The tough part of WLS is not the first year, it's those that follow.

Julie,

I, too, seem to get sick less often as a whole. I got sinus infections a lot preop and I still do get them now but not as often!

Some of us become sort of immunocompromised...sort of like with cancer or the like.  It doesn't happen to everyone...but, it's been something that I've struggled with.  Just keep taking your vitamins, protein is KEY...your body needs protein to heal and be well.  If you aren't getting all of your protein in, you may want to scale back regular foods and concentrate on that for a bit.
I know that, for me, if I don't get in all of my protein...I get sick and/or develop a new ulcer...but, I'm special...LOL.
Good luck!

It sounds to me that either you aren't being given the right antibiotics to begin with for the strain you have or they are giving you antibiotics that you aren't absorbing well.  Good luck, Loris
