Contemplating lap band surgery

I just have a few questions.  I am thinking about having the lap band surgery.  I have not been to a dr yet just getting some info online.   I have probably about 80+ pounds to lose to get me to a healthy BMI.  After losing the 80+ pounds, do you think I will have a lot of loose skin?  Also is there a diet that you have to adhere to after the procedure for life?  Thanks!

I hope that a few of our lap banders will be able to help answer your questions.  I also suggest going to www.lapband.com for general information and the lapband forum here on OH.

I believe most doctors consider WLS as an option for those who are at least 100lbs overweight or have a starting BMI of 35 or higher.  There are other things that can be determining factors like co-morbities if you do not meet a surgical groups minimum requirements.

Have you started looking for a surgeon yet?

Yes, most people have loose skin, but this is dependant on your skin elasticity and what weight you started out out and the condition of your skin prior to surgery and even age.  Everyone's results are different.

I will let a lapbander tell you about the eating part of it, since I am RNY and can't speak to that.  But my understanding is that lapband is restrictive only, so you wouldn't have the dumping or malabsoprtion that RNY has.

Good luck!

Hi, I had REalize lap band surgery on Sept. 29th.  I have lost 20 pounds and am off my diabetes medicine.

Yes, this is a life change.  Right now I have no restriction (see the surgeon on the 10th and hope to get a "fill").  I have not had any trouble eating anything or throwing up or getting stuck.

I had BMI of 42, diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesteral.

Will you be getting your surgery in Roanoke?  Don't know the surgeons there, but Dr.  Trehan in Charlottesville is my surgeon and I like him very much.

I still hope to loose 80 more pounds.

Best of luck in getting the procedure, it is the best thing I have ever done for myself.

Thank you so much for the information.  I have been thinking of getting the band for about a year, but really haven't done much researching with the insurance company, etc.  I do have an appt the end of this month with my primary care physician and hopefully I will meet the criteria for my insurance to pay.  I'm at a 37.6 BMI, blood pressure is up at times, and I have asthma.  Not sure about the sleep apnea though, but my husband says I do so snore.  There are a few doctors in Roanoke that do the surgery. They also have a support group that meets on the first Monday of each month so I think I will try to go to one in December.  You have had an amazing weight loss!  Congrats to you!!  Thanks again!

Hello again!  Jeane responded to my post so you would not have gotten a notification:  Here is her message.  :)

Hello,

Just wanted to say that I used Dr. Lucktong in Roanoke and would highly recommend him. He and his staff are awesome. He does perform RNY and Lapband. If you call them, they will send you a packet in the mail. There is a few others on the board that has used him.

I usually attend the meetings, but will have to miss the December meeting due to work. Hopefully I can meet you in January.

Good luck, Penny

Hi Penny,
Thanks for replying to my post.  Yes Dr. Lucktong is one of the physicians in my Aetna network  as well as Dr. Long.  I am just worried that I won't fit the criteria being that I need to lose 80 pounds to have a good BMI.  Im 5'3' and 212 pounds. Also I believe my insurance won't pay for the procedure until I have had six months of medically supervised weight loss program.  I am definitely planning on going to the meeting in December.  My appt with my PCP is 11/24.  Just anxious to find out if insurance will accept it.  Did you have to do the 6 month weight loss program first?

Thanks!
Angie
