Ok need's some advice on snacking.....

Ok so I have noticed a lil more and more this month that Im constantly wanting to snack. And I will even catch myself and say...am I really hungry...or just bored? I'll wait a lil while and then I will have to have something.

My biggest issue is I will snack through the day and then barely be hungry to eat a meal. I want to eat jerky all day and vitamin waters and then maybe dinner....my appetite is crazy....

Any suggestions on QUICK GOOD FOR ME SNACKS? How much snacking is too much snacking. Esp when you are supposed to eat a lil something every couple hours...am I just thinking it's too much? I snack about 5 times a day and then have a meal for dinner.

But I will wake up and want jerky for breakfast and a vitamin water or a half a mini bagle and a vitamin water.

Then I will just want to snac****ill dinner time.

Help ....:)

Hey Brandi,

Here are some suggestions for snacking that I do and the quanities.

Turkey pepperoni - I eat one serving which is 17 slices
Yogurt - I eat one serving
Cheese - I eat a couple slices of provolone or muenster at a time
PB & honey - alone or on fruit
Honey granola - 1 pack
Craisins - 1 mini pack

I have also been increasing my protein and fluids intake. This has really helped. Hope you find things that work for you!

Craisins!  I wouldn't have thought of that assuming they had sugar added, but they probably are just natural and dried right?  Good suggestion.  I love cranberries.  :)

Hey Brandi.  I eat about the same things Kat does plus add some fruit in there as well.  I am snacking more now...but I need to.  I am just trying to make it the healthiest choices I can.  Upping the protein can definatley help and making sure you are not drinking for at least 30 before and after eating meals or in your case snacks!

Hey Brandi!

This is an issue for me as well - especially in the afternoons and especially because I'm such a picky, picky eater. I discussed it with my nut recently and this is what she said (with the disclaimer of course that every program is different - this is just what she suggested for me)

I teach so I stay busy enough during the day that snacking at school is not a major issue. But then if I get home around 3:00....watch out. I'm going to want to snack all afternoon. So one big change we made was that I eat dinner as soon as I get home. Sometimes it's as early as 3:30 - usually it's 4 or 5. That way I get full and don't want to snack as much. Then I have my snack later in the evening, which is not as much of a trouble time for me. (I know you have a family so that may be a little more difficult for you - this is a perk of being single )

Here is the list of snacks we came up with for carb-crazy, pickiest-eater me:
- cereal (Cheerios or Special K high protein) with a little bit of milk
- 10 peanuts in the shell
- little bit of sliced baked potato with salsa and 2% cheese
- 1/4 cup chili
- string cheese

shoot! There was one more thing that I can't remember!

I think this is one of the toughest parts of re-learning to eat. Good luck to you!

Brandi,

Variety is fine but I didn't get that from your post.

If jerky and vitamin water is working for you, go for it.  Just be aware of your caloric intake so you are not shooting yourself in the foot with your successful wieght loss.

It is also good to make a conscious effort to have periods of not eating so you don't develop a habit of grazing through the day because weight gain will surely follow if you allow that to go unchecked.  That might be the bored part you sound suspicious of.  I try to make myself go 2-3 hrs without snacking as I would if I were jogging or doing a project or in meetings or something.  Its also agood time to sip on liquids like your vitamin water.

I tend to go thriugh phases with my between meals snacks.  I get hooked on something that works and stay there until the next revelation occurs and I switch ruts.  I typically , for the time being, do something for brkfst like  a PB Banana on wheat sandwich, fruit smoothiee w/protein powder, or my oatmeal/banana/protein powder concoction, then proetin bars (pure Protein Chocolate delux or Adkin advantage Choco caramel or cookie dough bars (2) and 2 bottle waters in the mid morning and again in the mid afternoon to get my protein and water in for the day.  I am also filling in with Nature Valley Oats and Honey Granola bars but be careful, I have learn 3 packs for dinner one night sent me into a dumping mode for 2 hrs about 45 minutes after eating them last week.  so 1 or 2 packs at a time, not a meal replacement.

Hoep that helps.  Your mileage may vary.  Keep up the good work.  Love your recent pics.  You look great!

I LOVE those Nature Valley Oats and Honey Bars!  They rawk and are so easy for on the go.  I buy a huge box from Costco and split it between my desk at work and home.

I'm SO unimaginative about snacks so I'm hoping you will get even more responses so it helps me too.  :)

My staples are a piece of fruit, pickles (I know that's weird), cheese cubes, glass of milk and a strip of fruit leather (like a flat strip of dried fruit - I get the organic Archer Farms brand at Target and LOVE them).  I also find that if I have a protein bar for my "snack" I do much better.  I treat that more like a mini meal, especially considering the caloric difference between a bar and lets say a piece of fruit.  But I very much enjoy eating my protein rather than drinking it and the bar puts me into my protein goal zone comfortably.
