Only 3 weeks to surgery...

I have only 3 weeks left until my gastric bypass, and Im both terrified and excited. Im not sure if thats normal. I was wondering if anyone could give me more insite on to what Im supposed to be expecting when I walk into the hospital. In the back of my mind I am hoping, and I know this wont happen, that they just immediately put me under:) Maybe if Im more informed on to what to expect then maybe I wont be so terrified. And does anyone know some good variations on the liquids, Im so stressed because I dont want to get bored on flavor.

First of all, Congrats on your upcoming surgery!!  Well here's what I went thru 2 weeks ago but I'm sure everyone is different and hospitals are different. I was put in a room, a nurse came in took my vitals and weight. I then walked over to another area and met the anathesiologist and they read over my chart and procedded to place my IV in. After that they injected something to relax me don't know what happened after that I was out!!  Don't buy too much liquids or protein!! I have so much left over I wont ever use again and wasted money!! Your taste will change after surgery so stick to: sugar-free jello, broth(chicken and beef), unsweetened apple juice, decaf coffee and tea, splenda(lots of it), sugar-free fudgepops and popsicles.

Nerves are so common...I think it would be unusual if you didn't have any!  :)

As far as what to expect, I would suggest you speak with the surgeon's staff or the surgeon himself to get the details.  I would venture a guess and say that everyone has had a different experience, so best you speak with someone there directly.  As far as being informed -- ask questions.  Lots and lots of questions, if that is what it takes.  It is important that you be an "informed consumer."

As far as variations on liquids -- I am guessing you are asking about protein supplements.  If so, my suggestion is getting samples and trying them out  (www.bariatriceating.com and/or www.bariatricchoice.com) .  You may find that after the surgery, your tastes will change.  For that reason, I don't suggest going out and purchasing a lot beforehand.  Have some things you like on hand for when you are supposed to start on them, then try others until you find what you like.

Best of luck with the surgery!

Good luck to you. Please keep us posted. I was immediately taken back at our hospital, checking weight, getting on the gown, paperwork, etc. I just had a calmness about me that day. Just remember you are making a good decision for your health.

As far as liquids, I like EAS protein drinks. Also the liquid whey is a quick easy way to get in extra protein. They sell at Wal Mart and GNC that I know of.

The nerves are completely normal.  I went from nervous to excited every other minute leading up to my surgery.  It the unknown that is scary, but you will do great.

I agree with an earlier post to ask your surgeon what to expect but they will most likely bring you back and check all your vitals, get your current weight, put in an IV and you will talk to the doctors, etc.  When I had my surgery, they gave me something to help me stay calm, wheeled me into the OR, had me move myself to the table and then I remember waking up in recovery.

As for liquids, I was told to hold off buying a bunch of protein drinks and try out my samples post-op.  Now, I didn't really have anything taste different, so I didn't have any problems.  For getting your water in, I would suggest getting a couple of Crystal Light flavors.  Water gets boring and I found I was easier to get the CL down.

You are going to be fine and don't hesitate to ask any questions, I asked a ton leading up to my surgery.

You will do fine!  I am local...pretty close to the hospital so let me know if you need anything or would like for me to try and swing by for a visit!

Definately check with your surgeon to see what will happen.  Everyone is different.  I did not get weighed the day of surgery.  I was taken back, met the anesthesoligist and was given a central line and an epidural then was wheeled back into the OR.  They moved me from the gurney to the OR table since I had the epidural and the next thing I remeber was counting backwards from 100...I made it to 96 then waking up in recovery with hubby standing there next to me.

Your tastes will drastically change after surgery so don't stock up on too much.  I did fine with plain water but ate a lot of ice chips, too.  I had to to sugar free carnation instant breakfast mixed with 8 oz skim milk and 1/3 cup of nonfat powdered milk  three times a day for two weeks.  I never wanted to see or smell another one after that again!

You will do fine!

Thank you for offering to come by, that would be so nice. I have a friend that went through wls last year and she did well, but the more people I know who went through it the better. Thank you for all of the info:)
