The lady  in the picture with me is the lady who snagged me last year at the GED Graduation and  pulled me into National, very sweet lady.
Virginia Governor Tim Kaine has declared October 13-19 as GED Week and October 15 as GED Day.  The Charlottesville Campus is proud to highlight a student and an employee, both of whom realized that a better life with more opportunities began with getting their GED. Melinda Gregory, Medical Coding and Billing Program http://www.national-college.edu/images/newsimages/101708/CVL1017b.jpg“I would have graduated high school in the 1980’s but decided to get married and drop out of school instead.  My plan was to go back and complete my education, but getting my GED was a goal I had difficulty obtaining.  I found myself working dead end jobs while going through a divorce and battling health issues all at the same time.  Reaching these goals hasn’t been easy for me but I’m glad I didn’t give up “One day I told my husband that I wanted to try for the GED.  He encouraged me to go for it and I did.  I contacted the Charlottesville Adult Learning Center to sign up for classes.  While the classes were made up of younger and older students, we were able to help each other achieve a common goal.  It’s exciting to be my age and know that I’ve accomplished this goal in my life.  “In June 2009, I will complete the Medical Coding and Billing program at National College.  Reaching these goals hasn’t been easy for me but I’m glad I didn’t give up.  I’m proud to be a GED graduate.” Melinda, pictured above left, was selected to be a speaker at the GED Graduation on October 22nd. Ramona Gordon, Director of Admissions “I was sixteen and in love.  Despite my parents’ reservations, they allowed me to marry.  Within the year I was expecting my first child.  This was during the time when married students were discouraged from attending high school and pregnant students were forbidden.  So, I quit high school to raise my sons. “One day while substituting at their school, I read a particular teacher’s comment that children of uneducated parents should receive less of her attention.  That’s when I started on my GED and completed it.  Dr. Emily Sterrett, Harrisonburg Career Center Director, was one of my instructors and encouraged me to pursue my goal of a formal education.  I went on to complete an Associate of Science degree, Bachelor of Science degree and a Master’s degree.  I loved my college experience but none of it would have happened for me without that GED.”  Ramona was a speaker at the 2007 GED Graduation.

Hey Melinda,

I'm really happy and proud for/of you! What a wonderful determination. Each step you are making these days is one closer to your goals and dreams coming true. You don't see it while you are going through it but when you get the end you'll see all your hard work, sweat and tears. :) Hugs...
